I wonder if Jude felt somewhat responsible for her mom's death. I think perhaps she does put blame on herself for her actions the day of her mom’s death. Jude’s counselor had told her that “guilt is a prison” (53) and if Jude didn’t actually believe this, she wouldn’t have shut herself out at school or limit her conversations to her “grandma’s and Mom’s ghosts” (52). I also believe the bad things happening in her life were a result of guilty conscience due to her mom’s death. Jude had an immense amount of guilt that made her believe her mom, from the dead, was trying to get revenge on her; “I think Noah deserves my spot. Isn’t that what Mom’s ghost is telling me by breaking everything I make?” (33). Jude highlights the fact that she feels undeserving of her accomplishments because of what she thinks her mom feels. If Jude had not felt responsible in some way, she wouldn’t analyze such small incidents in her life.

By using words with neutral connotations, it signals to the reader that Noah and Jude do not have a great relationship with each other anymore. Noah sometimes goes through an experience he described as catching Jude’s “shadow creeping around [his] bed at night trying to pull the dreams out of [his] head”(57). A phrase such as pulling the dreams out of my head, clearly indicate Jude does not have a good relationship with Noah if she does not want Noah to accomplish his goals and succeed. Also, Jude and her mother did not have a great relationship with each other either. Jude's mother complained about Jude “slamming doors, texting boys not from school, surfing with older suftards”(72). Their mother seemed to be very strict about what Jude can or cannot do but on the other spectrum, she was just trying to keep Jude safe. Nonetheless, the argument shifted their relationship.

The man Jude met had “a scar zigzagging across his left cheek and one running down the base of his nose into his lip”(41) which he could’ve easily gotten somewhere during the three year gap between Jude’s and Noah’s stories. Also, it would also make sense that when Jude met the man, he’s changed a lot, with his looks and attitude, from when Noah met him. When Noah met him, he said he was “a bloody mess” (65), so it would make sense that overtime, he’d ‘reinvent’ himself.

From this observation, I can infer or conclude…

From this observation, I can conclude that the men Jude and Noah met at different parts of their lives are the same man.

Page 33 OBSERVATIONS & INFERENCES
I noticed that… (Use specific details/quotation)
Jude got into the art school while Noah did not. This seemed strange to me since when we last saw them together their mother thought that Noah's work was better. This is why Jude thinks “Noah deserves my spot”(33). Jude seems to be feeling lost and guilty all the time. She even gets called into her teachers office to discuss her place at the school. He seems to be approaching her in a gentle way while also informing her about “artists around the country” that want “her very spot”(33). This statement in particular seems threatening yet Jude does not seem phased by it. In fact, she even tells him to “let them have my spot”(33)From this observation, I can infer or conclude that Jude has no motivation to continue her art career. This could be for a number of reasons including the loss of friendship with Noah and the loss of her mother. Finally, I believe that the reason behind the loss of friendship is from the schools decision to only let Jude in. This may be the reason why Jude feels lost.

She was very lost after her mothers death and did not want to loose her relationship with her brother. After hearing where Noah was heading she came out of her way to make sure he was safe. Jude was very cautious when Noah was cliff jumping into the water. She was watching his every move while diving and was preparing herself if he needed any help. After each second she asked herself “is he struggling?”(54) showing her concern for her brother. From this observation I can conclude that Jude wants to mend her relationship with her brother. She was worried that she had already almost lost him once at this same place and could not risk almost loosing him again

I noticed that Noah was the mother’s favorite, his unique style of art and natural skill at such a young age stunning her. While Jude and Noah were at a cafe with their mother where they were having a contest where the mom was the judge, the mother favored Noah’s drawings. Although she didn’t say it directly to them she ended the contest by saying “Contests are silly. Let’s spend our Saturdays for the next year appreciating art and learning craft,” (22 Nelson) before opening Judes book. I can infer that the reason why Judes mother broke her art piece was due to anger that Noah didn’t make it into CSA and Jude did. Although Jude’s her child, she showed favoritism towards Noah.

Maybe this guy will help her make art again, or help her with her mother's ghost, or help her repair the old bond between Noah and Jude, or help her try new things. I think that this guy will do all of those things, she already started doing something new and different when she allowed him to take a picture of her. he started complimenting her saying "Yes, thank you, this is bloody it, perfect, yes, yes, sodding hell, God look at you" (44 Nelson). I think that this guy will help her change her perspective on everything. For example she loved her grandma and looked up to her, in her grandmas bible it said that "Every picture taken of you reduces your spirit and shortens your life" (42 Nelson). But she still allowed him to take the photo, she is already changing.

think perhaps Noah and Jude distance themselves as much as possible from the thought of their mother. They think their mother is spiteful, oblivious, and moves with the wind. However, what they need is solid answers, and in the verses of their grandmother, and the scriptures from their mom, they know that they will never be satisfied

The writer uses symbolism in order to convey relationships. When Noah drew the English man with heterochromia, Jude fell in love with it and begged Noah to give it to her. Noah and Jude play this game which they divide the world and they get to own certain things. Jude owned the sun, the stars, the oceans, the flowers, and the trees. In exchange for his drawing, Noah demands for the sun, the stars, the oceans, and the trees, which he knows Jude would never agree to. But to his surprise, she does and she now owns the drawing. At this time, their relationship is at their peak, right before their crash and burn. Him giving Jude and drawing in exchange for almost the whole world symbolizes how in sync they were with each other and how they still had that special twin bond. But, later on in the book, when Jude does some questionable things, Noah goes into her room, rips the drawing that meant so much to her, and spreads the remains across her floor. This event mirrors their relationship, or more like the beginning of the end of their relationship. He destroyed the last ‘bond’ they had and now their relationship has changed forever.

Noah and Jude seem to have their relationship hanging on a loose thread. Through the different points of view, it’s clear an event with their mother around the age of 13 is the leading cause. Through Jude’s perspective, she wants the old Noah back and wants to mend their relationship slowly, despite the things she’s taken from him, ex. art school spot. However, Noah seems to lash out at Jude and believes she’s despicable, all the events in his life seem to surround her, even a good opportunity for himself. When Noah was offered a chance to work with Guillermo Garcia he thought, “Jude planned this. I’m sure of it… she’s been pissed at me about Mom… This is her revenge” (140). Much like how Jude felt in the previous chapters, Noah seems to have a guilty conscience about something he has done that has hurt her. This causes their relationship to weaken because they avoid each other to avoid the thought of guilt.

Noah and Jude's relationship is not completely broken, they still talk to each other but their conversations are very vague. Their relationship is crumbling and the author shows this when Noah goes into Jude's room and rips up the drawing of the naked guy and spreads the pieces all over her room. This is the moment where everything fell apart. The author shows the piece of ripped up paper as their twin bond. They both have changed a lot and it started before their mother died. Jude was popular and the most likable at the time and started to wear makeup and go to parties. But then she started to become very reserved and quiet. Noah started off as very reserved and just liked to draw but then he changed into someone who likes parties and girls. It's like they switched personalities.

In this book Jude and Noah' s relationship is slowly falling apart. We see through their short conversations throughout the text that they do not feel the same about certain things anymore. When Jude was talking about all of her new interests Noah says that she has become “totally freaking mental,” and how all of it was “embarrassing,” (Nelson,146). From Jude's defense she was just trying to look out for Noah, but he couldn’t see that. Jude says that there relationship that once felt inseparable and strong now felt “like [Noah] replaced [her]” (Nelson,147). We see that they both are fully aware of the changes that were taking place in there lives and relationship, but didn’t know how to deal with all the problems and frustrations that come there way.

when Noah comes home from the party, he rips apart the picture of the naked english guy and spreads it like confetti all over the floor, and rips up all the pictures of Brian. He then plans on throwing it all over Devils Drop. From this observation, I can conclude that the relationship of Noah and Jude, and Brian and Noah, have shifted negatively. For Noah, to rip up all the pictures of Brian is very unexpected as he has formed a great relationship with him

Noah states that they argue a lot about “breaking curfew , talking back, slamming doors, texting boys not from school, surfing with the older surftards.” These all seem like normal things that teenage girls would argue with their mother about. But the way that Noah and Jude describe these fights make it seem much more extreme.I think perhaps Jude felt like a disappointment since her brother was doing so well in studying art for CSA. In addition, I believe that Jude also felt left out by her mother and Noah. Noah even admitted that “Truth is: I think Mom and I had gotten used to not noticing her when the three of us were together.” I think that this may be the real reason why Jude and her mother fought all the time. Little did she know this would make it even more difficult to cope with her moms death in the future.

Noah is inherently caring about himself and understands the focus on himself is important, and implies that when he draws based on something other than his mind, he draws people and those around him. This leads away from the trope of artists being insanely observant, but does not stray away from the detail oriented artist
