Kelsey did not have much experience reading books on her own because she spent most of her time during reading instruction practicing test-taking and comprehension strategies and had few opportunities to apply and practice what she learned to real books.  I feel this is very much the same situation for many of our students. Hope was a dormant reader and didn't think she was a reader because she hadn't found books of interest. She needed a chance to browse many types of genres before finding her interest.
