What shall I think of what happened today? Maybe this was (again) a powerful experience which may lead to a deeper learning... The lovely garden, the plants not familiar to me, the "cottage" , the rhythms, the dance, the songs, little Andy among adults.... I may need much more time to go through all this in my mind:)

Today was again full of experiences and emotions: What a beautiful garden, wonderful plants, warmhearted people etc. Maybe the most powerful thing to me was the drumming session. It was amazing how easily good teachers made us to learn and live all the different rhythms. And it was not only about learning the rhythms, it was much more. The session made me to realize how important a role does music have in the cultures of people. With music you can tell your story and the others can understand. The great feeling of togetherness comes when playing together. That is something to remember in one´s own class.

Music is the mutual language of the whole world. It is fun that it at the same time combines and separates. It was also wise to bring something new to the situation. We sang and played together each others folk songs. New place, new people, common language - music. Today we learned different rhythms and melodies. The whole place was touching. It was wonderful to see that someone is living happily and peacefully in harmony with nature.

Today we had a chance to visit a Guadeloupean home surrounded by a beautiful Creole garden. We experienced how music combines different cultures and we were able to feel how Guadeloupean rhythm suits so well to Finnish folks songs. It was wonderful to see how people strange to each other could make music and create a feeling of belonging together. Wonderful rhythm made us feel like at home!

What a beautiful and exiting day: We learned seven different styles of traditional percussion based music. Before we went to our todays classroom at Basse Terre, I expected that the Guadeloupe percussion music could be pretty close to afro-cuban or afro-brazilian music. Although there is a large common denominator between these Afroamerican musical traditions, all of the Guadeloupe rhythms seem to me quite unique.
William, Michel and Jean-Marie were the perfect men to teach us how to groove along with the rhythm patterns and the chants. I'll surely try to play some of this music with my students in the upper secondary.
I enjoyed to listen to Rita and our course mates present their traditional music from Lithuania, Finland and Croatia and to sing with them together. And it is nice to have this good spirit in our course.
Last but not least I really loved to spent the day at Georges and Marions place. They are such lovely and open minded persons. And their Creole garden is just wonderful: all these good fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices; not to forget the natural beauty of the blend.

A day like in paradise. Jean-Marie is convinced God imagined people to live in a garden like that. Plenty of fruit and vegetables all growing in their natural environment feeding the people who look after them.
We met amazing people who were so willing to show us a little part of their life and shared their time and music with us. After Rita had introduced us to her traditional Lithuanian music in a very touching way we were taught the Guadeloupe traditional rhythms by William who is so charismatic that all of us took part happily right away. With the support of his friends he made the day unforgettable for me.

I don't remember when was the last time I felt so relaxed as I did today in the beautiful garden. Just when you think things can't get any better you get a chance to play music, sing and dance. Music has always had a special place in my heart. The energy I felt from the people today was amazing. Total strangers from many different countries and cultures sharing music together. I have learned so much. Listening to Rita playing her instrument or listening to Finish traditional songs was amazing. And then joining their music with Gwo ka rythms … Wonderful! And even though I got scared and could not sing my own song properly I liked it when we all joined together and danced traditional dance from my country. Thank you all for dancing with me. Our hosts were amazing, friendly and kind. They opened their home to us with such warmth. It was a day to cherish and remember.
