Frictional Force: Hovercraft experiment! by Jia Yi

Post a boomerang of your cd hovercraft and answer the following questions.

(i) How does it work? Relate the experiment you carried out to frictional force.

(ii) Do you think the size of the balloon affect the CDs ability to hover?

(iii) Do you think a helium balloon will work better than an air filled balloon?

The experiment failed due to experimental errors. However, we manage to learn and find the answers through online resources.
(i) How does it work? Relate the experiment you carried out to frictional force.
The air created a small space between the CD and surface.

(i) How does it work? Relate the experiment you carried out to frictional force.
- (i) The small hole in the centre of the CD forces air escaping from the balloon downwards. This creates an opposite force upwards which lifts the hovercraft off the ground. The CD spreads out this force evenly along the bottom of the hovercraft.

(ii) Do you think the size of the balloon affects the CDs ability to hover?
Yes it does. The bigger the balloon, the more it hovers.

(iii) Do you think a helium balloon will work better than an air filled balloon?
No, helium balloon will make the balloon float up. However, it will not hover around like an air filled balloon.

(i) How does it work? Relate the experiment you carried out to frictional force.
Air comes out from the balloon to create space between the CD and the table, and the friction force is reduced, therefore the CD can glide around the table easily, aided by the movement of air
(ii) Do you think the size of the balloon affects the CDs ability to hover?
Yes, the more air there is, the longer the CD can hover
(iii) Do you think a helium balloon will work better than an air filled balloon?
Maybe... We think that the helium will lift the CD off the table slightly, causing there to be more space in between the table and the hovercraft, but it won't be lifted too high since the CD is heavy.

Since helium air is lighter, it may allow the CD to hover easier.
