I want to collect analysis on the accounts of the abuser's childhood, the abuser's average experience in the concrete development stage, the abuser's average educational surroundings, and more information involving the phases of socialization during developmental years.

I want to speciffically interview the abusers who have suffered the consequences in any shape or form of their actions. This can include serving a sentence, paying fines, psychiatric or theraputic rehabilatation, or societal ridicule. The limit does not exist, they just have to be able to reflect on their actions to explain in ways other than "I dont know why"

Connection 1: Gaslighting

For this particular article, we are looking at the abusive technique of gaslighting. The term gaslighting was first coined in 1969 from a paper that analyzed involuntary hospitalization as a form of abuse. The term is mainly used by psychotherapist and referred in psychotherapeutic literature, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) has been proposed to have a connection in gender-based power imbalances. Gaslighting can be executed in unequal intimate relationships, creating a surreal environment. In this micro sociology, the action can also mobilize gender based stereotypes and institutional vulnerabilities against victims. The environmental control of making one feel as though they are in confusion or have lost reality creates a hierarchy in the relationship and creates almost a personal slave to the abuser. Abuse can also be more common across socioeconomic backgrounds and worldwide. Many women report a hostile environment of confusion when the term “crazy” was combinedwith the female epithet “bitch”, creating a feminine derogatory name. Stereotypes among women have also contributed to this gender imbalance and fuels the fire for gaslighting control. This can include Hispanic women being sexualized for their body shape, black women being deemed as crazy, and many other common racial stereotypes that are demeaning.

Intersectionality and Domestic Violence

Intersectionality is the connected social categorization of subjects such as race, class, gender, and any trait that groups a certain domain. While domestic violence does not discriminate and can happen to anyone, society can certainly do so to victims. In the U.S. there is an average of 24 people per minute that fall victim to any form of abuse (National Domestic Hotline: Domestic Violence Statistics). The lucky few that do not have to suffer this mistreatment, however, can cause society to perceive survivors in a stereotypical form that creates a barrier to proper assistance and care for the victims. The intersectional approach to treatment allows for individualization of treatment and eliminates focusing on the identity marker to properly understand and resolve the problem.

Kimberle Crenshaw and Domestic Violence Intersectionality

Kimberle Crenshaw first coined the term “intersectionality” to explain the issue of African American women in society and how they suffer through “Double Blindness” by both their race and gender. However, the term has since evolved into a phrase that explains where one can see where power comes from and collides and not just a small race problem or small gender problem. Crenshaw created the term by imagining two intersecting roads clashing together where you can be helped on each one, but not both. The same can be seen in the article speaking about immigrant women who suffer abuse. A survivor who cannot speak English suffers additional oppression such as greater barriers to receiving care by not being able to report it to the authorities because of limited English or fear of being deported. Crenshaw also speaks about frames and how they section out the issues. There are no frames for women of color who suffer from violence, so the media, politicians, and government officials don’t speak for them. Without frames, those victims fall into a trapped isolation leaving these women resourceless and suffering.
