Steve Harmon, at the end of the book, has the verdict of "not guilty". His father and his lawyer both cast doubt/confusion on his verdict, since they both (like many others) thought he was guilty for being a lookout during the robbery. Even I was shocked by the fact that he was innocent! This reminded me a lot of OJ Simpson's first trial, where he was announced "not guilty" for the murder of his wife. Many believed that he was guilty, but he still received a verdict of innocence. Just like OJ, Steve had a very good and convincing lawyer. Both were "innocent", but we don't seem to fully understand how.

Steve is terrified because O'brien said that Bobo's testimony hurt their case a lot. Steve is really not ready to be put in jail forever. During the book, we meet two defence witnesses for James King: Dorothy Moore and George Nipping. Dorothy Moore is King's cousin and George Nipping is a family friend. Dorothy Moore said that during the day of the crime, King was at her house giving a lamp. The prosecution thought she might be lying on the stand, because she didn't have the lamp to prove her statement. George Nipping said that King was left-handed,implying that the person who shot the gun was right handed. This also casted doubt, because George had never seen King shoot a gun. In this part of the book, Steve Harmon presents himself to the jury to prove his innocence. His alibi was that he was gathering mental notes about his film project during the crime. Mr. Sawicki proved that the film project was real. What didn't help his testimony were the two key prosecution points against Steve: Bobo saying that he saw Steve leaving the store and Cruz saying that he heard Steve was going to be a lookout. After the long journey of the trial, we finally have a verdict. James King is sentenced 25 year to life in prison with the verdict of "guilty", while Steve Harmon has the verdict of "not guilty". Although the trial is over, a new adventure has begun for our main character, Steve Harmon. This new adventure will be for him to find himself and to know who he is. At the end of the book, there is still one big question mark left in all the readers minds :"What did O'brien see when she turned her face away from Steve once they won the trial?"
