독도의용수비대는 1953년 4월에 결성되었다.
1953년 6월 일본 수산고등학교 연습선 지토마루 호를 서도 150m 해상에서 나포해 일본으로 돌려보냈다. 같은해 7월 일본 해상보안청 소속 순시선이 독도에 접근하자 위협사격을 가해 이들을 격퇴시켰다. 1954년 6월 홍순칠 대장 등은 독도바위에 한국령 이라는 글자를 새겨 넣었다.
11월에는 일본 순시함 세 대와 격렬한 총격전을 벌여 승리하였다.

독도수호대는
명확한 근거와 자료를 바탕으로 독도 문제를 올바로 인식하게 하고, 합리적인 대안을 제시하며, 실천적인 노력을 통해 독도의 정통성을 확고히 하고 나아가 민족 화합과 통일에 기여하기 위해 2000년 3월 1일 결성된 시민단체 입니다.
주요 활동으로는 2000년부터 독도의 날(대한제국칙령 제정일 10월 25일)을 국가기념일로 제정하기 위한 국회 청원, 1,000만 명 서명운동을 하고 있으며, 2004년 최초로 독도 물골 수질검사를 실시해 부실한 관리정책을 개선하기도 하였습니다.
