Hi! I’m Jeremiah, but you can call me Jem. I’m a 17-year-old graduating student at Ateneo de Davao University Senior High School. I’ve never really settled into a specific hobby for an extended period of time. I often find myself doing one thing today, something different tomorrow, and yet another thing the day after! As for my likes and dislikes, they’re pretty straightforward. I appreciate respect and enjoy being around those who value it as well, while I can’t stand the opposite.

“Carpe Diem,”

a Latin phrase for seize the day, has a massive impact on my perspective in life. This movie revolves around a protagonist named Neil who has never had the option to do what he wants, as his father has already pre-determined the paths he will take in his life. He really wanted to act, but his father wanted otherwise–he was forced to stick to academics, as this is, accordingly to his father, the only way he could achieve success in life. With his father being strict, a deviant child was built. Neil decided to go around his father’s back and pursue acting. Not long after, he was caught and forced to stop his dream without even having the chance to achieve it. The same night of the conflict, he took his own life.

This movie made me realize that deviance is not always a rebellion, but sometimes a form of self-expression.

There is a part in this movie where the protagonist, named Charlie, asks his teacher about why nice people choose the wrong people to date. His teacher then replied,

“We accept the love we think we deserve.”

This phrase has gotten into me, as this made me realize that our perception of our worth influences the kind of love and treatment we allow ourselves to receive from others. This phrase has helped me help my friends to remind them that they deserve every love there is in this world, which is why they should never settle for a situation where love feels like a luxury.

“Have you seen my beautiful boy? Tell him I miss him.”

This line came from a father’s letter to his son, a teenager who had become addicted to drugs. The movie centers on a dad who would do anything to help his child change. But just when things seemed better, his son would relapse. The father tried everything—doctors, multiple rehabilitation centers, and even tried drugging himself just to understand what his son was going through. But nothing worked. The teenager couldn’t resist the drug’s pull, leading him to steal from his family, run away, and continue using with his girlfriend.

Eventually, the father, exhausted and heartbroken, gave up. Soon after, the drugs took a toll on his son’s body, landing him in the hospital. The story ends with a reconciliation between father and son.

This movie made me shed tears, but it also gave me a deeper perspective. First, addicts are victims too—the first time may have been a choice, but the second often isn’t. Second, even the purest hearts get tired when pushed too far. It taught me to never take love for granted.

“I get quiet and very still. And I say to myself, “Everyone in the world is as miserable and empty as I am. They are just better at pretending.”

A part of this movie involves the protagonist, Nadine, who is convinced that she is the only miserable person in the family, making her hate his brother for being the perfect child, parents’ favorite, socially active, intelligent, responsible, and conventionally attractive. But what she failed to see is that his brother is also struggling. The statement above is Nadine’s mother’s advice to her when she was ranting about her brother. The movie ended with Nadine and his brother reconciling.

This movie made me realize that we are all experiencing our own setbacks in life–we just have different ways of dealing with them. Knowing this made me consider checking everyone, including my friends who are all smiles and hugs, because we don’t know, maybe a simple “how are you” is what they need and long to hear.

Each stage of my life, from infancy to adolescence, played a vital role in my growth. The trust and love I received as a baby became the groundwork for my relationships. My independence in early childhood and curiosity in preschool pushed me to explore the world around me. Elementary years disciplined me and strengthened my competence through academics, while adolescence has been a period of reflection, responsibility, and eagerness for success. Altogether, these stages reveal that personal growth is not instant but a collection of experiences that guide me in becoming more responsible, resilient, and self-aware.

How did this subject help you know

yourself more?

Yes, Personal Development was very helpful for me because it allowed me to understand myself better, how I think, feel, and react to different situations. It taught me to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses, helping me see the areas I need to improve. I also learned how my experiences and relationships shape who I am today.

What two topics were your favorites and why?

My favorite topics were mental health and well-being and family structures. I liked mental health and well-being because it reminded me how important it is to take care of myself, especially during stressful times. I also found family structures interesting because they helped me understand how our families shape our behavior, values, and outlook in life. Both topics made me reflect on my own life and appreciate the people who support me.
