Suleiman was born to Selim I in 1494. He grew up under the rule of his father, who reigned over the Ottoman Empire and was widely disliked. Suleyman had a strong interest in science, history, literature, etc. He surrounded himself with painters, poets, musicians and artists. At first glance, he seemed quiet, peaceful, and calm. However, when his father passed away and he inherited the role of Sultan, this changed. Suleyman was ambitious, violent, and vain. he had many wives and ten children total, one of whom, Hurrem, he killed in fear he would take his place.

Millet System

The term millet in context of the Ottoman History means a religiously defined people. The Millet system had a cultural and communal framework based on religion and ethnicity, in which people were separated by faith. Each millet held it's own institutions such as schools & education, religion, hotels, hospitals, justice and social security. This still remains a modern concept today. Suleyman created this system of toleration in allowance for people to establish their own independent religious organizations. (Talip, Kucukcan. Supporting Question 4.) This reform led by Suleiman helped to increase his popularity among his people and allow them to live and make their own choices in return for their loyalty to him.

"The Ottoman Empire was, in origin, a military institution, dedicated to fulfilling the sacred obligation of extending the 'Adobe of Islam' by conquering the lands of the unbelievers." (Palmer, Alan. Supporting Question 3.)
Suleiman expanded the Ottoman Empire using his military intelligence and skilled army. Suleiman had a strong desire to conquer and gain land for his people, and to leave a lasting impression. His goal in accomplishing that was to unite the East and West. Suleiman took his army to different countries and cities across Europe and Northern Africa, eliminating threats and expanding his land. His army surrounded cities and ruthlessly bombed and shot them down, taking hostages and prisoners. His army, made up of many slaves, was violent and talented, and under the command of Suleiman's tactful and brutal decisions, was powerful. While they had losses, including his first attack on Vienna, Güns, Algiers, Tunis, Penan de Velez, and Bougie, he had many victories, also, including Belgrade, Rhodes, Egypt, Tripoli, Syria, Constantinople, and more. This was how Suleiman managed to gather so much territory, using his army. (Woodward, Geoffrey. Supporting Question 2.)

Slaves

Unlike other leaders, Suleyman's perspective on slaves was quite different than most. One of Suleiman's closest and most beloved friends was a slave. He saw them less as simply workers, and had a more personal view. Slaves worked in the military and were highly skilled and trained. They were respected in the Ottoman culture for their dedication and hard work. The military allowed slaves to move up in society and make a life for themselves. This was another reform Suleyman put to use and was successful with. As a result, his military was determined and strong, and he was able to create equal opportunities for everyone, earning respect.
