Revisionism is the re interpretation of ones history only through intensive research and solid evidence to support or justify the reason for rethinking the ideas in the fist place. One of the main lessons learned in this course was the fact that the Caribbean history known today was documented from a Eurocentric white perspective, therefore, holds corrupt representations of what truly occurred in the past.

The story told of the neo Indians and the first peoples past has now been proven to be very biased and filled with misconceptions which are still taught in schools within the region today. The education sector of the Caribbean is crying out for revisionism to present the Caribbean population with an accurate representation their history and identity.
The Caribbean Region was divided between two large homogeneous groups Caribs and Arawaks. This misconception was perpetuated by the Europeans to justify their cruel and unjust treatment of the neo Indians. The term Caribs were used to describe the natives who fought back against the Europeans while the Arawak’s were used for the submissive natives. In actuality, no such groups existed as there was no divide within the neo Indians as these people lived as one

Being a science student at the university, the thought of having to endure 13 weeks of Caribbean history was pain staking. Having down Caribbean studies for CAPE, which is a similar course teaching similar ideals, I thought this experience was going to be redundant and a complete waste of time. However, I am now proud to say that I not only enjoyed the course and its material but I now have an accurate representation of the Caribbean and my Caribbean identity.

The biggest issue faced in this course was the use of online lectures. In addition to having a clash with another class, I always experienced difficulties in using and accessing blackboard collaborator which was always frustrating. However, the course redeemed itself in its face to face tutorial sessions where I had lively discussions on controversy topics plaguing the region such as male masculinity, gender inequality and the slavery.

Special mention must be given to the showing of the video “Fire in Babylon”. It was in this tutorial session that I truly understood the importance of unity within the region and its link to Caribbean identity. This documentary was symbolic in showing the power of unity within the region and how it can be used to overcome Europe influence and empower the Caribbean people. This documentary filled me with a sense pride and belonging.

Overall, this course is essential to all Caribbean students as it gives us a sense of identity and belonging in a world that is becoming more and more Eurocentric.

The single story is symbolic of the negative perceptions black Caribbean people hold of themselves. Being ripped from their home soil, blacks were brought to the Caribbean and told by their white slave masters that their culture, beliefs and way of life were impure and inferior. they were told the story of the whites and forced to learn and practice their way of life. This led to a loss of identity among black people as they abandoned their authentic self in order to fit into European culture . This issue of loss of self still resonates in the region today and has manifested itself into a generation of self hate, self doubt and lack of self worth. Had the blacks been able to tell their story, the Caribbean people of today would be in tuned with their ancestral roots, their true self and their true identity

The university of the west indies is the biggest university body in the Caribbean, though having numerous campuses scattered throughout the region, it is supposed to be treated as one. The one UWI initiative’s main objective is to restore unity within the region as our future development is dependent on our ability to think and act as a region. This type of togetherness was seen in the Caribbean when the region came together to dominate international cricket. This showed the Caribbean people that together we can overcome the oppressiveness placed on us by the rest of the world. The fragmented perception Caribbean people holds of the region is deep rooted in its people due to our colonizers. Offering the same degrees at all campuses, the use of lectures at all campuses as opposed to one and the hosting of cultural mixing events are some of the strategies which can be used to spark and encourage unity. This course is a manifestation of this initiative and continues to show the important strides which can be achieved through unity
