Helmuth Hübener was born in 1925, in Hamburg, Germany. He was a member of the Latter-Day Saints Church. Helmuth Hübener was forced to be a part of Hitler Youth. Hitler Youth was created by Adolf Hitler in 1933 to educate and train teenage boys in Nazi beliefs. Helmuth Hübener saw one of his church leaders join the Nazi Movement.

He wanted to spread information about the war to people who did not listen to the forbidden radio broadcasts. Helmuth Hübener’s pamphlets went against Nazi propaganda. He told about Nazi lies and battles that were lost.

After Helmuth Hübener was arrested, he was excommunicated from the Latter-Day Saint church by the branch president, Arthur Zander. Otto Berndt, district president, would not allow Helmuth Hübener to be excommunicated and Anthon Huck agreed with Otto Berndt. Many members of the Latter-Day Saint church wanted to protect the church from the Nazis by distancing themselves from Helmuth Hübener.

In Hamburg, a pathway and a youth centre was named after Helmuth Hübener. Two streets, a school, and a youth center in Hamburg have Hübener’s name. On January 8, his birthday, and October 27, when he was executed, have celebrations celebrating his bravery. Near Plötzensee Prison, a school at a juvenile detention center was named after Helmuth Hübener on Janaury 8, 2020.
