- How does the power dynamic change in Cinderella stories when the evil stepmother is a male? Can this new relationship be interpreted as more misogynistic than the relationship between two women?

- Abuse related to gender

- What will change in the story if the stepsisters are turned into stepbrothers? Why do they not want Cinderella to go to the ball? Would they still be jealous of her relationship with the prince?

- Theme of women hurting women and the common belief throughout Cinderella tales that these are only harmful relationships between women will be altered

- Warped family values are a theme (the stepfather conditions his kids to be sexist and have no respect for women)
- The godmother is her deceased mother reincarnated who informs her about the sexism of her stepfather and stepbrothers (themes = toxic masculinity, sexism, misogyny, female wisdom)
- Theme = men are needed for a happy ending

Introduction to Cinderella’s mother and her new husband who is sexist (note that the mother married him out of fear and this is not a true, loving marriage)

Cinderella’s mother passes away unexpectedly and the reason is never stated but it can be assumed that this is because of abuse

The stepfather encourages Cinderella to work every day and she is constantly belittled with sexist comments by her stepfather and stepbrothers

The ball is instead a business, investment event. All of the men are businessmen and they order Cinderella to stay home and clean as she always does. The event is a networking event in hopes of making connections.

Cinderella’s mother comes reincarnated as the fairy godmother and transforms Cinderella into a man to attend the business event

Cinderella attends the business event disguised as a man and ends up making a huge connection with a CEO of a company.

Cinderella returns home and is transformed back into her original self.

She calls the CEO asking to grab coffee and introduces herself as her true, female version. He accepts her and still pursues a working relationship with her.

Cinderella moves out and becomes a huge businesswoman, leaving the sexist men in the past

She does not rely on a man to pursue a career

- Men are needed to save a woman from her circumstances
- Cinderella tale is not ever thought to be about sexism since the main characters are mostly all female, but I want to show that when gender is altered, sexism can be a main, critical aspect to consider
- I am showing that fairy tales can make societal commentary about sexism and toxic masculinity

Inspiration For My Tale

- Maitland's "The Wicked Stepmother's Lament" is a big inspiration because it gives reason to the stepmother's actions. In my retelling, I want to make sure that the stepfather does not have any understandable reasons for his abuse; he is simply sexist and against women. The lament allows readers to understand the stepmother's actions so I will use it to make sure I check all my boxes in the fact that the stepfather and brothers cannot be excused.
- I really want to base the outline on Andersen's version of the tale, arguably one of the most known. I want the structure to be the most typical Cinderella story so that the sexist commentary is what stands out most. I want the message to be the focus not necessarily intricacies of the tale
- Thomas and Stornaiuolo are the basis of the project. In a sense, I will be "restorying" with Thomas and Stornaiuolo's ideas in the back of my mind. Although this inspiration is likely present for all students, it is critical for me to use.
