Many are drawn to Gatsby for various reasons. Since the beginning of the book, Jay Gatsby is a man of mystery. He throws lavish parties, yet he himself seems to not be entertained. In general, this is an excellent tactic to draw the readers in because it keeps them wondering who he really is, why does he host glamorous parties, and how he acquired his wealth in the first place. Furthermore, it is later revealed that he became rich through organized crime. This aspect of Gatsby draws readers in by showing off his flawed side; ambition to a fault. However, it makes him more admirable in the sense that he was not only able to get away with it, but in the process he became a highly respected and successful man among society. Lastly, his main motivation for becoming rich and educated was for love, which appeals to romantics. It adds a distinct, yet intriguing persona that ultimately ties together to create a beloved character by nearly all.

The format in which Jay Gatsby's story is told is the a huge reason why. It doesn't leave most important information explicit to the reader and instead has them think about questions in which they'll be able to find those answers. It allows a good type of story that gets the reader actively involved in creating a cohesive version of events for the story which attracts active people who want to get captivated with the mysteries and the ability to answer those huge questions themselves. Not to mention his character is relatable in how he's a man who changed everything about himself to try and get something that was just out of reach, and perhaps something that was never meant to be.

I believe Jay Gatsby is popular because of the story line that Fitzgerald had created for him. In the beginning of the story he presents Gatsby as a very mysterious man who not many people know much about him or his past. As the story prolongs we get some information and insight about his past life, for example that he went to Oxford for a few months after the war and that he has a past with Nick's cousin Daisy. Small details are mentioned to Nick by Gatsby himself about his past. We learn that Gatsby came from a very low class family who were very poor. His wealth was brought up by getting involved with some illegal business, and he was okay with getting his hands a bit dirty because he wanted to become wealthy so he could impress Daisy. Gatsby wanted the American dream of being wealthy and getting the girl, but in the end it shows how usually the American dream don't truly happen for some individuals. Or that they can get a small taste for it then, sadly lose it all in an instant.
