Farmers animals and crop were dying. President Assad had strict laws/regulations on rights to wells. This meant the farmers had to illegally drill their own wells, possibly facing death. As the farmers lost land and their farms, they moved into the already crowded cities. Causing water and food, already scarce resources, to become dire. There were no jobs for anyone, so a small group of boys spray painted a slogan on a wall.
"The people want to topple the regime."
The boys were arrested and torture, causing protests turned violent, and thus the ongoing war.

Assad said he would make amends with all the issues in the country, but made no move to do it. The US imposed sanctions on Syrian leaders. EU follows suit. Opposition groups begin to form in hopes of ending Assad's government, and creating a democratic system. Russia and China (superpowers) veto a UN resolution that would help put end to fighting with opposition groups. US voted in favour. In 2012 and shelling results in Turkey deaths, in response Turkey fires back and begins sending soldiers. Chemical weapons are used, suspected use by Assads groups. US Senator John McCain visits and shows support of rebel groups. Assad agrees to get rid of all chemical weapons. Assad is reelected in 2014. US focuses on attack ISIS. Russia begins to back out in 2016. A lot of bombing occurs, and the government takes back land. 2018 withdraw troops after "defeating ISIS". The Kurdish take last bit of land ISIS has. Government: Russia, Iran, Hezbollah, Shia Muslim militias

Rebels: Turkey, Gulf Arab states, USA, Jordan

The Kurdish: don't support the government or opposition, they fight ISIS. Turkey is fighting the Kurd's, the Kurd's received help from US.

The main suspect, although not proven guilty, is the Syrian Ba'athist military, who are controlled by Assad. Some are returning to their homes, but very few.
