It allows a kind of social commentary that reaches far more people than would subscribe to any newspaper or traditional media source. Music connects everyone who listens to it; it allows us to empathize with others regardless of their situation. This kind of music makes people feel empowered and keeps them aware of the issues of today and what we can do to fight for ourselves and each other.
