I allow each student to request late access to 1 writing assignment. I know that the unexpected happens. Every student gets access to one closed writing assignment. You must email me and answer the following:

1. What assignment are you requesting to submit late?

2. Why was it not submitted before the due date?

3. How do you plan to submit future assignments on time?

Even if you have already addressed one of the questions in a previous email to me, you must answer it again. I need all required questions addressed in one reply email. Consider the email professional communication and treat it as such.

Only reply when you are ready to submit. I only leave second-chance dropboxes open until 11:59 p.m. on the day of your request (or next business day if outside of OTC's operating hours). Stay close to your email and keep checking for a reply from me. It is your responsibility to submit your work before the dropbox closes.

NOTE: I do not allow late access to discussion board posts, professional communication grades, or quizzes (as they have multiple attempts). Missing one of these is to be treated as a learning opportunity. They're weekly assignments that you should automatically expect to have. Make sure that you develop a routine to get these types of assignments in on time each week. See your Start Here module on BB for a schedule.

NO REQUESTS CAN BE MADE AFTER WEEK 10. ALL GRADES UP TO WEEK 10 ARE FINALIZED AT THE END OF WEEK 10 AND CANNOT BE ALTERED.

There are three grade enhancement opportunities for everyone:

1) Seasonal Padlet Writing (+5 or +10, depends on your grammar)

2) Course Evaluation (end of semester, grade drop)

3) Final Exam Study Practice (<10 points on your final exam, depends on your best score)

All grade enhancements are added at the end of the semester. Everyone has the same opportunities. You must pay attention to my announcements/emails and read them completely to see when these grade enhancements become available...

To that effect:

I sometimes hide extra points that you can claim by completing simple tasks and emailing me proof. The extra points are not planned, and they act as a reward for students who read my announcements/emails. For instance, if you read this, email me a funny meme that has something to do with literature or grammar, and I'll give you 10 points on a quiz (request a specific one or I'll choose).

Here is my statement that I email out to students suspected of AI use...

"Your submission seems like AI, and I have given you a zero for this assignment. You cannot make it up. If you would like to prove that you did not use AI, I will accept a version history from your document on your Office365 Word account, or you will need to come to my office and submit a writing sample. I am making you aware that I am suspicious, and I need to see your honest writing abilities moving forward. I will be looking closely at your future work for any sign of AI use. If I suspect AI a second time of any student, then I require the student to come to my office, answer several questions about the writing, and write something for me by hand that I use to compare. It is my recommendation that you write using the Word app on your student Office365 account through OTC, as it automatically saves a version history that you can submit to me as proof, as well."

-Mrs. C

How are the discussion boards graded? How strict are the rules?

My standard expectations for the discussion board posts are for the topic to be addressed completely and for there to be evidence/examples to support any claims/points that are made. I also expect it to be a substantial amount and "look" like the required length (see the Discussion Board Requirements Sheet in the Start here module on BB). If I start to question the length, then I will check, comment on it, and take off points. If the answer is not complete or lacks depth, then I will count the words, comment on it, and take off points.

I always use the rubric on the discussion boards to maintain a fair level of grading overall. However, I do have more leniency for everyone at the start of the semester, and I try to grade with flexibility as you all improve in your writing. As your abilities grow with each week, I start to grade more intensely and comment on different aspects of your writing. I try to target my feedback to each student's personal needs. Some students may get feedback about grammar while other students receive feedback on their conversation skills, for example. However, the process only works if the student reads my feedback each week and attempts to apply it to their next writing. I expect clear, cohesive, and grammatically correct answers on the final exam, too.
