He imagines that stacks of gold coins surround him, closing off his route of escape and denying him space. They seem to be closing in on him and he appears to be at the point of figurative suffocation.

At that point, it seems that the protagonist is willing to do anything, even harming himself, to escape from the siege of gold coins.
