It is the simplest possible atom, hydrogen is the lightest of the elements and is the most abundant element in the universe.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>The most common place to find hydrogen on earth is in water. Hydrogen is also found in a wide range of compounds throughout the earth including hydrocarbons, acids, and hydroxides.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>Hydrogen is a very useful element. It is used to make ammonia for fertilizers, refining metals, and methanol for making artificial material like plastics. Hydrogen is also used as a rocket fuel where liquid hydrogen is combined with liquid oxygen to produce a powerful explosion. Scientists hope that someday hydrogen can be used as a clean fuel alternative to gasoline.<br><strong>Interesting facts</strong></div><ul><li>Scientists estimate that Hydrogen makes up over 90% of all the atoms in the universe</li><li>It is the only element that can exist without neutrons.</li><li>Around 10% of the mass of the human body is hydrogen.</li></ul>]]></description>

It is at the top of the noble gas group in the periodic table.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>There is very little in the Earth's atmosphere because it is so light that it eventually escapes into outer space.<br>Scientists believe that most of the helium in the universe was created at the formation of the universe. However, new helium is created in the center of stars and also as part of radioactive decay on Earth.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>Helium is used in balloons and airships to make them float. <br><strong>Interesting facts </strong></div><ul><li>In general, helium will not combine with itself to create molecules, but is found as a single atom</li><li>The speed of sound in helium is around three times the speed of sound in the air. This causes people's voices to get high pitched and squeaky when they breathe helium.</li></ul>]]></description>

Another application is used in ceramics and glass. It is part of the alkaline earth metal group.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Beryllium is often found in the minerals beryl and bertrandite. It is found in the Earth's crust and mostly in igneous rocks. Most of the world's beryllium is mined.<br>Beryllium is also found in gems such as the emerald and aquamarine.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>Beryllium is used in a number of applications. Many of its uses are high tech or military. One application is in windows for X-ray machines. Beryllium is unique in its ability to appear transparent to X-rays. Another use is as a moderator and a shield in nuclear reactors.<br><br>Beryllium is also used to make metal alloys such as beryllium copper and beryllium nickel. These alloys are used to make surgical instruments, precision instruments, and non-sparking tools that are used near flammable gases.<br><strong>Interesting facts</strong></div><ul><li>It was originally discovered in a compound with oxygen called beryllium oxide.</li><li>Too much exposure to beryllium can cause a lung disease called berylliosis.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Boron is classified as a metalloid which means that its properties are in between that of a metal and a nonmetal.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Boron is a rare element on Earth. Pure boron is not found naturally on earth, but the element is found in many compounds. The most common compounds are borax and kernite which are found in sedimentary rock formations.<br><strong>Uses</strong></div><div>Most of the boron that is mined is eventually refined into boric acid or borax. Boric acid is used in a number of applications including insecticides, flame retardants, antiseptics, and to create other compounds. Borax is a powdered material used in detergents, cosmetics, and enamel glazes.<br><br>Boron is used to make  glass and ceramics. It produces high end cookware materials. It also helps to make glassware for science labs. It forms more compounds than any other element and forms the basis to all plant and animal life. Carbon is the fourth most abundant element in the universe by mass and the second most abundant element in the human body.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Carbon is found throughout the earth. It is a major element in many rock formations. Carbon is also found in many compounds including carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere and dissolved in the oceans and other major bodies of water. Carbon is found in all forms of life. It makes up 18 percent of the human body by mass.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br> It is used to make all sorts of materials including plastics and alloys such as steel (a combination of carbon and iron). It is even used to make black ink for printers and painting.<br>Graphite is often used in making batteries, brakes, and lubricants.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Nitrogen is part of the group of "other" nonmetal elements.<br>Nitrogen plays an important role in the life of plants and animals on earth through the nitrogen cycle.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br> the most common element in our air is nitrogen. The Earth atmosphere is 78% nitrogen gas or N<sub>2</sub>.<br>Even though there is so much nitrogen in the air, there is very little in the earth's crust. Nitrogen can also be found in all living organisms on Earth including plants and animals. It plays an important role in proteins and nucleic acids.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>The primary industrial use of nitrogen is to make ammonia. The process  is called the Haber process where nitrogen and hydrogen are combined to make NH<sub>3</sub>. It is the third most abundant element in the universe and the most abundant element in the human body.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Oxygen is found all around us. It is one of the most important elements on planet earth. Oxygen makes up around 21% of the earth atmosphere and 50% of the mass of the earth's crust. Oxygen is one of the atoms that makes up water.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>Oxygen is used by animals and plants in the respiration process. Tanks of oxygen are used in medicine to treat people with breathing problems. They are also used as life support for astronauts and scuba divers.<br>The majority of the oxygen used in industry is used in the manufacturing of steel. Other applications include making new compounds such as plastics and creating a very hot flame for welding. Liquid oxygen is combined with liquid hydrogen to make rocket fuel.<br><strong>Interesting facts</strong></div><ul><li>The oxygen that is found in the air is produced by photosynthesis. It is found in minerals in the Earth's crust. The main source of commercial fluorine is fluorspar the majority of the world's fluorspar is supplied by China and Mexico.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>Fluorine is rarely used in its pure form, but many compounds of fluorine are used. One of the most popular is fluorine used for refrigerant gases. Today they have been banned because they damage the ozone layer.<br>Fluoride is a reduced form of fluorine when bonded to another element. Fluoride is helpful in preventing tooth decay and is used in tap water and toothpaste.</div><div>Other applications that use fluorine include high temperature plastics, the smelting of iron and metal production, pharmaceuticals, etching glass, and in processing nuclear fuel.<br><strong>Interesting facts</strong></div><ul><li>The bond formed between carbon and fluorine to make fluorocarbons is the strongest bond in organic chemistry and is very stable</li><li>It is found in the gemstone topaz.</li></ul>]]></description>

Neon is the fifth most abundant element in the universe.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Neon is a very rare element on Earth. It is found in very small traces in both the earth's atmosphere and the earth's crust.<br>Neon is a much more common element in stars and is the fifth most abundant element in the universe. It is created during the alpha process of stars when helium and oxygen are mixed together.<br><strong>Uses </strong><br>Neon is used in lighting signs that are often called "neon" signs. However, neon is only used to produce a reddish orange glow. <br>Other applications that use neon include lasers, television tubes, and vacuum tubes. The liquid form of neon is used for refrigeration and is considered a more effective refrigerant than liquid helium.<br><strong>Interesting Facts </strong></div><ul><li>Neon gas and liquid are fairly expensive because they have to be recovered from air.</li><li>Neon gas is monatomic, meaning that its atoms don't bond like oxygen and nitrogen. Pure sodium can be recovered from sodium chloride through electrolysis.<br><strong>Uses </strong><br>Sodium is primarily used in the form of compounds with other elements.<br>The average person uses sodium every day in the form of table salt in their food. Table salt is needed for animals to survive, but most people use it for adding flavor to their food.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal and it is the eighth most abundant element on Earth.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Magnesium is quite abundant on earth in compounds and is found in over 60 different minerals in the earth's crust. The compound magnesium oxide is the second most abundant compound in the earth's crust making up around 35% of the crust by weight.<br>A significant amount of Magnesium is also found dissolved in ocean water. <br><strong>Uses</strong><br>One of the main uses of magnesium metal is in metal mixtures. This is because it is both strong and light. It is often mixed with aluminum, zinc, manganese, silicon, and copper to make strong and light mixtures for use as automobile parts, aircraft components, and missiles.<br>Magnesium metal is also used in electronic things. Its light weight and good electrical properties make it a good element for use in cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers, and other handheld electronic components.<br><br>Another application of magnesium is in various compounds. Some compounds are used as medicines such as magnesium hydroxide which used to help indigestion (Milk of Magnesia) and magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) which is used in baths to soothe sore muscles.</div><div>The human body needs magnesium for good health. Sulfuric acid is the top chemical used by the world's industry. It is used to make car batteries, fertilizer, refine oil, process water, and to extract minerals.<br>Other applications for sulfur based chemicals include bleaching paper,  making products such as cement, detergents, and pesticides.<br><br>Sulfur also plays an important role in supporting life on Earth. It is the eighth most huge element in the human body. Sulfur is part of the proteins and enzymes that make up our bodies. It is about the twentieth most abundant element in the Earth's crust.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Chlorine can be found in abundance in both the earth's crust and in ocean water. In the ocean, chlorine is found as part of the compound sodium chloride, also known as table salt. In the earth's crust, the most common minerals containing chlorine include halite , carnallite, and sylvite.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>Chlorine is one of the most important chemicals used by industry, it is used in making a variety of products including insecticides, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, textiles, and plastics.<br>You have probably heard people mention that chlorine is used in pools. Chlorine is used in pools to keep it clean and safe by killing bacteria, germs, and algae. It is also used in drinking water to kill bacteria so we don't get sick when we drink it. Because it kills germs, chlorine is also used in disinfectants and is the basis for most bleaches.<br><br>Chlorine is needed for the survival of animal life in the form of table salt.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Argon is the commonest noble gas, making up nearly one per cent of the earth's atmosphere.<br><strong>Where can be found?</strong><br>Argon is the most abundant of the noble gases in the earth´s atmosphere. It constitutes nearly 1%  of the volume of air making it the third most abundant element in air after nitrogen and oxygen. Argon is also found in small traces in the earth's crust and ocean waters.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>Argon is usually produced from liquid air as a byproduct of the production of nitrogen and oxygen.<br>Because argon is the most abundant and cheapest of the noble gases, it is often used when an inert gas is needed. One of the main applications for argon is for the gas inside incandescent lighting. Instead it is found in different minerals such as sylvite, carnallite, langbeinite, and kainite. Most minerals that contain potassium are called as potash. Making up about 2.1% of the weight of the Earth's crust, potassium is the eighth most abundant element in the crust. It can also be found in ocean water where it is also about the eighth most abundant element.<br><strong>Uses</strong><br>The largest use of potassium is potassium chloride which is used to make fertilizers. This is because potassium is important for plant growth.<br>Industrial applications for potassium include soaps, detergents, gold mining, dyes, glass production, gunpowder, and batteries.</div><div>Potassium also plays a important role  in our bodies.
