The format was first developed by a team at the Bulletin Board Service (BBS) provider CompuServe, which was led by Steve Wilhite, an American computer scientist. The format was introduced on June 15, 1987.

GIFs are compressed using the patented Lempedl-Ziv-Welch lossless compression technique, introduced in 1985. A controversial announcement by the patent holder, Unisys, and CompuServe stated that developers would be required to pay a license fee in order to continue using the patented technology which makes GIFs possible. This controversy between Unisys and Compuserve later led to the development of the PNG standard, introduced in 1994. By 2004 all relevant patents had expired.

Colour Pallet:
The GIF file format for image has low color pallet . This file format only have 8 bit color meaning that there is only a variation of 256 colors.

Image Quality:
The GIF has a higher image quality compared to JPG. but there is less colors that can be used to make up the image compared to a JPG which is 24 bit color.

What is Dithering?
Dithering is where there is white noise or loos in image quality due to the lack of colors available it makes it seem as tho there are more colors when there are not.

What does dithering do to the file compression of a gif?
because there is different colors for the image, there is more data that needs to be saved and because the color change the compression sized file is bigger.

How would you keep a GIF animated file size small?
reduce the amount of frames that are used so that there is less information to be saved but there is still enough to convey the image to the view.

GIFs can be opaque rather than transparent?
Gifs can only be transparent or not there is no inbetween.

the main browsers that support GIF`s are Firefox, safari, chrome they are the most commonly known and used by people.

When you save a GIF (export it to the web) there will be an option to pick a cooler to make the background transparent it will automatically pick the halo`s cooler.

Interlacing is weir an image starts off pixelated and slowly over time it will come to its full resolution, this interlacing technique is supported by GIF.

There are many clients that you can install to view GIF`s for example on of these is GIF viewer. This works by when you view the GIF image in GIF viewer it will run the GIF just like it would in power point and when ever you go to open it up next it will open in GIF viewer all the other times.

GIF`s support lossless LZW compression methods, it doesn't really have affects on it.

GIF`s can be animated, they are either easy or hard to make it all depends on how complicated you want to make them but either way they take a lot of time.
