Repetition can be found in almost any song you listen to, especially on the radio. Choruses of songs are identical and same goes for verses. Previously in the Western Canon, there wasn't nearly as much repetition in the works, but it still was present. Over time repetition has grown more and more popular and it is a staple in music nowadays. I loved how Ratliff described repetition not as just one sound that never changes. Many people's first idea of repetition is that description. Ratliff describes it as having variation and having subtle differences. He explains that repetition is a main way of keeping the listener engaged with the music, giving them something the recognize and can sing along to and even learn. If a song was completely different in all of its components first off it probably wouldn't sound good, but secondly, the listener would be tired of it because there would be nothing they could easily go along with in the song. All of the music would be different and the listener would have to know that beforehand. If a song was completely the same though, it would be terribly boring and monotonous.
