What is a barcode?
A barcode is a code made from numbers and a pattern of parallel lines of different widths.

How does it work?
A laser light is shone at the barcode. The light is reflected back off the barcode into a CCD. The white areas reflect more light and the black areas reflect less light. The CCD measures the amount of reflected light and the light reflected is then converted into an electrical charge where it is then converted to a binary code. The binary code is transmitted to the till computer. The values are often sent as ascii code.

ANPR provides lines of enquiry and evidence in the investigation of crime and is used by law enforcements agencies.

How it works?

As a vehicle passes an ANPR camera, its registration number is read and instantly checked against database records of vehicles of interest. Police officer can intercept and stop a vehicle, check it for evidence and, where necessary, make arrests. A record for all vehicles passing by a camera is stored, including those for vehicles that are not known to be interest at the time of the read that may in appropriate circumstances be accessed for investigate purposes. The use of ANPR in this way has proved to be important in the detection of many offences, including location stolen vehicles, tackling uninsured vehicle use and solving cases of terrorism, major and organised crime. It also allows officers' attention to be drawn to offending vehicles whilst allowing law abiding drivers to go about their business unhindered.

The Global Positioning System is more commonly referred to as GPS. It is a satellite navigation system that is owned by the United States government and is ran by the United States Air Force. It is a global navigation satellite system that provides location and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on Earth. These receivers receive satellite signals passively, they don't transmit and they require an unobstructed view of the sky so they can only be used effectively outdoors. A GPS receiver estimates the location of the satellites because that information is included in the transmitted Ephemeris data (data that tells the GPS receiver where each GPS satellite should be at any time throughout the day). By estimating how far away a satellite is, the receiver also knows it is located somewhere on an imaginary sphere centred at the satellite. It then determines the sizes of several spheres, one for each satellite, and therefore knows the receiver is located where these spheres intersect.
