Ammonium sulfate and nitrate clogged together under the pressure of its own weight, turning into a plaster like substance. The workers had to use pick axes to get it out, they couldn't enter and risk getting buried in collapsing fertilizer. To help them, they decided to use small portions of dynamite to loosen it. This was considered safe, but little did they know ammonium nitrate was highly explosive. Every time they did it, it was fine, except the day of September 21.

Both fires were very big and took a toll on the city. The eplosion at IEI plastics warehouse was not as big, but still did damage to the environment. The Oppau explosion killed and injured many people. The fire here didn't kill anyone and no one got injured from the fire. Although, people did get sick and have problems from the smoke.
