Rainsford was able to use his smarts to run away from General Zaroff. The general challenged Rainsford to a duel but Rainsford outsmarted the general by making his own way through the forest. He decided to use a boat but when he fell off his boat, he used his intelligence to decide where people were. He figured out that where there were gunshots, there had to have been people. Because of that he survived.
