question 2) Today's young people are spoiled and rarely learn to cope with adversity. As a result, they are more often depressed and unhappy in later life, because they do not know how to deal with setbacks.

First of all, it is often largely the parent's fault. The parents are much less strict compared to before. Those rules of behavior weren't always fun, of course, but they did offer structure. Now this structure has disappeared from upbringing. Children grow up in their own world, because they are allowed everything and their parents give them more often what they want. Negative things are blocked off as much as possible, only positive things are allowed into the children's world.

Subsequently, many parents think that spoiling makes their children happier, but this is just the opposite. Later when they live alone, many people do not have that luxury as they did when they were small and spoiled. And there is their first setback from which they find it difficult to get out.

In addition, a protective upbringing is not always the right upbringing. Some parents bring their child to school by car, because they are afraid that it will fall off a bicycle, end up in a rain shower or have to cycle against the wind. While it is important that a child falls once in a while in his childhood. Because if children don't experience disappointments in their youth, they don't learn how to deal with this when they are adults. Then they do not learn to deal with adversity, frustration, anger, loss, heartbreak. These are all things that are part of life and that you have to prepare children for.

so no, I'm convinced that many young people are less able to cope with adversity than they used to, but that it's to a large part due to their upbringing.

question 1) There are a lot of bad things about the coronavirus. Especially the many people who die, but there are also many benefits.

First of all, there is much less pollution. You have much lower CO2 emissions, because everyone stays in their homes, so there are far fewer cars on the road. Also the planes hardly fly anymore, because travelling is not allowed. Especially in countries like China and the US this difference is very big. Also the canals in Venice on which the tourist boats sail have not been that clean in a long time. Besides, the decreasing air pollution has an impact on our health.

As a result of the pandemic, we are inside our house and automatically think of the little things in life and the things we considered self-evident. We now have time to think about life and look at it from a different angle. Many people have different insights and are changing their lifestyles.

Subsequently, many more people suffer less from stress. Many people take it easy, because they don't have to go from one place to another to do everything. A lot less is expected of us, because a lot of things can't be done anymore.

Last but not least, I think it brings a lot of people together, of course at the necessary distance. Every night there are people clapping for someone who deserves it, or they make a song, or many people are also creative. In these times I have found that people are much more willing to help other people and especially the older people. I hope everyone will take this with them and continue to do where it's still needed after this coronacrisis.

Question 2) (a resonse to Jade) Personally I would say that I agree with you. It's true that some parents spoil their kids and therefore they have never experienced real misfortune. If something would happen in their life they wouldn't be prepared and they will blame others for it. The sad thing is that they truly believe that nothing is their fault and that is indeed because of their parents raising them that way. But in my opinion you are talking about a relitively small group of people that you represent as almost every child. Altough you might not see it directly, their are still a lot of people that have to deal with dead, disease, abuse and much more. I think it's only a small minority of people that grow up spoiled, but it's that small minority that stands out the most, and that's why we see it as a much bigger group. But personally I think that, some young adults can indeed cope less with misfortune than past generations, but a lot of people still have to deal with it every day.

response question 2
Jade and Brecht. You make a fair point. It is true that some kids are spoiled. These days technology has advanced more then ever before. The age of getting a phone keeps getting younger and younger and almost every household has a television.

Still, some people can not afford these luxury items. Though soms people spoil there kids, because they thought of there upbringing as too strict. Some do the opposite. A strict upbringing comes with its advantages and some parents know this. They bring their children up a strict way, because their parents did it for them and they worked out fine.

This leaves me to the conclusion that I couldn't agree more with Brecht his statement. Some kids are raised spoiled, but not all and there are a lot of varieties that can make life hard. The parents and their way of raising aren't the only factor in the upbringing of a child. There is the environment, deaths, the school education which they (the parents) can not control. Kids now may have more technology but it is not all good. Internet also means the risk of cyberbullying ,virusses, hackers, ...

This situation kids are in right now is another example of the struggles of life. You can't see your friends or family who you do not live with.

I think those people are very strong in their shoes after they have overcome it and are better able to cope with setbacks. They no longer see the world as a pink cloud, they see reality and know that it is not always beautiful and carefree.

To come back to the question, I don't have a clear answer. I think we now have a luxurious life compared to the past, which means we are more often confronted with setbacks. They didn't know such luxury in the past, so they saw things that we now see as setbacks, maybe not as setbacks.

question 1) I completely agree with Jade, the crisis has a lot of negative sides to it, but personally I don't find it hard to see a lot of positive sides to it. Almost everywhere, you see pictures and stories about mother Earth recovering from all the horrible pollution that the humans have caused. There is clear water and way less airplane and car pollution. But, like Jade said, not only nature is transforming, but we are transforming as well. We have never cared more about each other, everyone is helping everyone, it doesn't matter anymore if you're rich or poor, black or white, fat or slim. We all want the same thing, and that is to go outside and to do fun things with our friends. Because of that shared goal, we are united. We all support our caregivers and we finally recognise what they mean to us. This crisis has let people think about what they can do to help. We came up with thousands of ideas, like making mouth masks and donating them, cooking for the poor, collecting money for the healthcare industry and much more. I have to conclude that this crisis has brought us more together then ever before, in my opinion, it has more positive effects than negative, this needed to happen to wake up the world.

Q1:
There are positive points about corona, we are "stuck" at home, but it allows you to spend more time with your family. Before corona, I barely saw my parents in a day. We are a family that doesn't do a lot of things together. We're almost never at home at the same time so we don't eat together, ...
I'm not saying we're together 24/7 now, we still each have our own room, but we talk more to each other. Sometimes we play board games or go for a walk together. So the quarantine has brought us closer as a family.

Another positive point is that the earth has time to recover. A lot of factories are not working now, the airports are closed, you are also not allowed to make unnecessary trips, so less cars are driving around, ... So there is a reduction in CO2 emissions.
As you may have seen on the news, so much has changed in the first two weeks. In Venice the water is clear again, so you can see fish again, the smog is gone in a lot of cities, ...

Question 1 I agree with the previous opinions. As they say, there are many negative things about the virus, but there are also some positive things.

First of all, We're always busy with our work so we lose sight of other things like ourselves and family. These are fundamental things in our lives, but we don't always pay enough attention to them. Now we have time to develop ourselves and do things we've long wanted to do but didn't have time for.

For example, at my home we are closer with each other than before. Normally we don't see each other much, but now we're all four at home and that's nice, we amuse ourselves.

Furthermore It's also has a positive effect on nature. There is less co2 emissions and some animals, such as animals at the sea, can live and breed more quietly because there are hardly any people there. I hope that we now understand that we have to take care of nature and that we are now convinced that you don't always have to make a big effort to do so.

response question 1
We can all agree that there are indeed positive sides to the Corona crisis. As Jade said, we are getting closer to each other and Sabina her family is a great example of that. Offcourse not unimportant, the planet has a benefit in it too. As said, there is less polution and there are clearer waters.

I fully agree that the answer to the first question is yes. There are a lot of positive sides to the Corona crisis. We are starting to appreciate the everyday life more. All the things we may have took for granted are coming to light and we miss them. For example, going to work. Most people had to quit working and stay at home. These people might actually miss going to work, but they can also appreciate staying at home and spending some time with the family.

I also truly hope that we keep the pollution to the minimum after the crisis. Another posititve side is that they are working on more roads for cyclists in Brussels. Less people ride in their cars and more ride on their bikes. In Brussels they want to keep it like that after the quarantine.

Question 1:
As my fellow students have already mentioned, there are many advantages to COVID-19, despite its many disadvantages.

An example of this is that there is a low CO2-emission due to the fact that there are far fewer cars, fewer planes flying and even canals are so clear due to the few boats that are still sailing. In this way, the earth can catch its breath again.

A second kind of example is that people have time for reflection. People now have time to see their life from a completely different perspective.
Because many deathlines, meetings... ...employees can catch their breath. It's much easier to postpone priorities now. The chance of a burn-out has decreased for the time being, but we don't know if this will have a positive effect, because it could be that they suddenly have to catch up, which causes extra stress.

A final kind of example that I'm going to discuss is appreciation for the healthcare sector. There are a lot of doctors, GPs, nurses... who do everything they can to keep the number of corona patients as low as possible. Because of this, there is a lot of appreciation for the health care personnel and that was necessary after the many complaints about violence against health care personnel.

It is so beautiful to see how people work together and do everything they can to help people.

I want to give them everything I can give, if you have the money, why not?
And like Brent said, there are a lot of people who aren't that rich and spoiled and if you are, you will always be so it's not like that these children will be unhappy later.
People will always cope with disappointments, even if it's about something small and stupid.

Even I have said that this is a good thing and that I truly hoped it would stay that way. But, I recently discovered that it could actually be negative in the long run.

Now, we see the positive change, the decrease of pollution. Unfortunately, this might only be temporary. As explained in this video, the factories might have to fill a gap made by the crisis and hereby speed up everything. Just as Glenn said with the employees and the burn-outs the facories could need to work over-time. In the clip they speek of using cheaper and more polluting elements to make up for the losses in the crisis. This could lead to the conclusion that the Corona crisis is worst for the environment than expected.

I agree with Jade and Brecht. I think some parents spoil their children too much and solve everything for them, leaving their children with no experience of solving their own problems. Fortunately, they learn to be independent in school. The older you get, the more you are expected to take steps yourself to solve your problems.

As Jelina said, the age of getting a smartphone is decreasing more and more.

response question 1: Sabina
Some citizens might receive this wake-up call, but the remainers who did not will still continue to live their life as before, unknowing of the severe consequences. If I were a factory who lost millions due to the Corona crisis and had to chose between continuing at the normal pace and lose the money for good (which will not harm the planet) or make up for it and work over-time (harming nature), in other words winning back the money, I would chose the second option.
I think many factories will do the same, causing more harm to the planet after the Corona crisis than before.

question 2
I agree with Sabina. There have been spoiled people in the past and there will always be spoiled people in the future.

We have all maid good points. All in the assumption that spoiled kids can cope less with problems. In my previous text I concluded that young adults now can cope equally as good as the past generation and I still stand by my statement.

In my opinion the percentage of spoiled young adults compared to the non-spoiled young adults now is around the same percentage as past generations. The population and technology might have grown, but as I said before with every new fortune comes a misfortune.

In conclusion I still stand by the same statement. I just wanted to make it a little clearer.

I understand that but I'm talking more about using less plastic or taking the bike instead of the car, ... I have always drunk from plastic bottles, because I thought 'it won't make that much of a difference', but now I will buy a drinking bottle. I realize now how beautiful the world is and we should not ruin that. I think a lot of people will think like this now, I think we will enjoy the little things again, things we were so used to and things that we took for granted.

Yes indeed, we will respect nature so much more I think. If all people see the beauty of nature we will have a completely different view on nature. I really hope we will all do our best and use less plastic, use the car less and pollute the air less, by traveling less by plane.

I agree with Jelina, it's not because we have more technology that we have less misfortune. We might even have more misfortune because of it. It only makes us jealous of people who have a better phone, tv or car than us. It only separates the rich and the poor even more then before.

Q2: I also agree with Brecht, Glenn and Jelina. Education is not the only element that matters. There are many other elements that make young people less able to cope with adversity. And there are probably a lot of parents who don't spoil their children very much, but I do think that if you compare it to 50 years ago, parents spoil their children more. And as Jelina says, the environment and the school takes care of this in part.
What Sabina says is also true. I have generalized the aspect of pampering too much. But what I still find, and I stick to that, is that parents in general have become stricter than 50 years ago. Of course, there are always exceptions. Sabina says that if you have the money you are going to spoil your children more and I agree with that, but this also partly makes them more normal later on and when they have a setback they are less able to stand it. But of course if I have the money I would give my children what I can give them as long as they realize that they have to work for it. What Jelina says is true that people have their own problems and experience bad things, but this used to be the case. Problems have existed since people have existed, but there is a difference in the young people now and in the past, so I don't think it's because of that. Yes, people who go through a lot of things are probably better able to cope with setbacks, but this is not a difference with the past, so for me it's not a cause .

Q2: yes Sabine there probably used to be spoiled people too, but now society is making sure that this is even more so than before. The example of the mobile phone that others said. They all didn't have this in the past and now they do. It is easier for parents to spoil their children than it used to be.
My conclusion is therefore that young people are less able to cope with setbacks and this is mainly due to the society that has changed. Because of this the parents and also the children change.
