Motivation:  The important were gold, glory and God. Also get knowledge and make more acucurate maps. The silk route was controlled and sailors wanted to find other routes to access the silk and spices. 

New routes would make them happen to be famous and they were so because they reached a new continent. They also wanted to expand the Catholic faith.
