First day of part 3. A lot of information.
I really got interested on my research goals. I also decided the goal of my project brief very fast. I want to create character concepts based on cultural and historical reference. My main ideas for base references are playing cards, tarot and candomblé. All of those three aren't necessarily things that I usually research on, but things I've recently stumbled on in conversations or researching for work and projects that caught my attention.
For this process I want to change the way I do things. My regular method is to design the visual concept and the background story of the character at the same time. Now I want to try to develop all the background stories first so I can jump to the design with a very strong conceptual reference. By doing this, I will allow myself to really focus on one thing at the time and explore other forms of creative solutions that are not my visual based standard one.

Referral reflection:

My goal for this project is to go fast and with quality. Since I have to do the passport and moving sculptures together with part 3, I have to be as much organised as I can. For this propose I will work on the referral project at home. I want to work with action figures and characters so I can link this project to my part 3 project. My idea is to make a model of a character that comunicates movement, but I still have some doubt if I'm going to make something that actually moves.

Referral reflection: I started the day with life drawing and reference drawing. From that I realised one way to really communicate through the characters that I'm going to create. I will try to represent the characters from the deck of playing cards in modern days. The actual story of the game is still blurry in my mind. But I want to design something for a combat game that happens in the modern days. The main characters would be some sort of reincarnation of the four king in the deck. To make it more real I want to go deeper and base the kings on real people that I know. To be able to do this I already started contacting some friends. This idea started when Solange questioned me weather I was going to do something like it yesterday. Now, probably one of my new research goals is to find my "four kings" and see how I can relate them to the cards in the deck, since the kings in the decks are probably representations of real kings from history.
I really like this kind of conceptual contrast. Using a historical reference in modern days create a almost mystical atmosphere to the story , which, for me is one of the best things in the games that I like. I always imagined myself as the main character when playing games or watching movies and animation. I love how games like Assasin's Creed can bring this duality between modern and past days and I want to recreate this feeling.
Another conceptual contrast that I'm looking for is the image of the king reimagined. I don't want only to make heroical male characters. I want to make characters that seem powerful but are not the standard of powerful as we're used to see in big media entertainment. For an example I was thinking of LGBT characters, strong woman, etc. I'm going to look for people like this to base my characters on.

Referral reflection: Mostly I worked on the referral. Started with the portfolio. Basically, I want to just get what I had and rework it so it looks better. Anyways I don't have much more work to put in it but I think what I have is enough. I just have to present it in a better quality. The only thing I decided not to change (just to add more) is the website. Manly because I like it already and, from what I have seen of the other students websites, it looks good even if Cezar said it looked to simple. For me a website like this looking simple is actually great. if you take Artstations from artists or even other Behance pages, it is always a very simple design so the work can be displayed in a clean way.
Now, researching about the moving sculpture: I'm certain that I want to communicate movement instead of making a object that moves. I really like dynamic poses and I think it relates to concept art so it is going to help me on my Third part project at the end. I have this passion with characters and I'm probably going to do something with one, either original or based on an existing one. To start with, I think I'm going to just draw poses and gather some reference on what I can do. The main problem for me is the main presentation. I have to test materials and ways of doing the sculpture in time, the only thing that I know is that I want to create something more like a clay model than a more conceptual sculpture in terms of materials. I'm not very inclined to use recycled materials for an example. To my mind this project is an opportunity to use methods used in moving image industries. Another thing which is still not clear to me is the recording of the piece. I don't know if I'm going to be able to make a 3D model of the sculpture with the knowledge that I've got now, and I'm afraid I end up making a simpler sculpture just to be able to model it later. Looking from another angle, I still don't have any ready 3D models to put on the portfolio.

Refferal reflection: today I decided to redo my letter for B.A. My problem with it has been with how to say what I want to say. I have a pretty clear reason for why I want to do games, that is related to my passion to entertain people in a not very exclusive way, but to elaborate a text about it is really hard. To be honest, the one that I did before is terrible and was not actually about what I wanted to say but more about what I think Kevin would want to hear. This time I will try to be true to my on believes. I really believe that art should be more accessible to everyone, and recently my mission as a creator is to make things with quality but with reachability. That's why I hated to do the protest project on part one, I think. To make a protest in english in a country that only the people with money know english is to make exclusive art. Now, looking back I should have protested about it. I want to make things that any people from any place, with any age or social class can interact and have fun. There is a lot of criticism already in the art industry about the world. We should be trying to make fun things also to balance and make people happy. I love games and animated movies, entertainment in general, because it creates this crazy atmosphere where you can travel to outside your problems and concerns and just enjoy someone creation. Characters are a big part of it for me because they can incredibly relatable and present unexpected solutions to real life problems. I don't know yet how I'm going to write about this and still follow the model for the letter.

Referral reflection:
I started gathering research material for the moving sculpture. My first Idea was to begin with drawing and studies on poses, but after the visit to Comix store I chose to start differently and My research began with action figures. I really enjoy action figures, specially the more artistic and detailed ones. I got some images and just started drawing and analysing them. I'm coming closer to what I want to do. I probably want to make a sculpture of a person in a very dynamic pose, it can be a martial arts pose or an air pose. The one thing i don't know is weather I'm doing an already existent character or I'm going to create one myself. The character making process is something I really enjoy, but I'm afraid of getting to focused on it and not giving the necessary attention to the movement itself. Another option is to make a neutral character with no face or clothes, just the anatomy. The issue with this is that I think it's too simple. Getting a character for a comic for example is a good way of attending my needs. Now, my challenge would be making the sculpture so it looks like the character. Tomorrow I will just draw poses and see what can be interesting to sculpt. The correct process for this should be picking a pose and than the character, I think. This way I'll truly make sure I'm building the sculpture around the movement.
Another thing, I decided to just take pictures of the character and maybe make a gif. Doing three projects at the same time is not going to happen if I also try to learn and make 3D models.

I also started a research on materials, but I couldn't find anything that interesting or new. At this moment I moment I have two main options for material. First and more probable that I use is a regular polymer clay, since I have a little experience with it and I have some at home. The other one is regular clay. The problem with regular clay is the drying process. I've never being able to make clay dry properly, and I've tried a lot of methods like using natural heat, strong lights, no lights. The problem seem to be the type of clay that I'm using. I would have to look for better quality clay and I couldn't find it even in a specialised place where my mom buys it for ceramics.

referral reflection: I found out my reference today! I'm going to make a sculpture based on a photo from a project called "0 gravity man". It is a photographic session of a japanese model called Sen Mitsuji. There is more information on my research file about it, but basically it is a collection of photos of the model and actor jumping on B&W. I belive I chose this pictures because they are a great representation of movement. I actually found it looking for action poses to draw. The exact picture that I'm modeling is a pose that intantly called my attention. I guess it is because he looks like he is falling, but in a very precise and powerful way. It remembered me of a hero pose after a super human jump. Also I liked his style. He is using only pants and has a very thin body. I am excited to sculpt it, since I wil be abe to really work on the muscles.
Regarding to materials, I bought today a plastic ceramic called Super Sculpey. It is used a lot on the industry from what I could understand. It can be baked which is a huge advantage on regular polymer clay. I just don't know how to do it properly, but I baked smal pieces and it went fine. No cracks and no burning. I will do more tests with it and my clay so I can decide.

Also I went to a bunch of places to find aluminium wire to use in the sculpture, and only in the 4th store I found it. I don't get why people don't sell it more. Another thing I did was the armature for the sculpture based on the drawings of Sen's photos that I made on the weekend. the armature was kind of easy thanks to a project I had last year with Sol in which I had to make a wire sculpture based on a frame of a man running. I really can see how this more technical experiences from pre foundation are helping me this year, that everything is happening so fast. after doing the wire part of the armature I covered it with aluminium foil paper so I can work faster, since I will have to use less super sculpey or clay.

referral reflectionFinished the sculpture. I had a couple problems that I should write down so I don't repeat the same mistakes again.
First Problem: I chose not to make a support or the sculpture so I could hang it. This made the process with soft clay (the one I had) very hard, because it would break if hanged and would deform if I just left it on the table.
Solution: first I decided to use super sculpey because I can bake it and it will harden, not deforming and being able to be hanged.
Second problem: how to breakdown the Super sculpey. It comes rock hard and breaks very easily. At first I used only my hands to soften it but it was taking ages.
Solution: After a bit of research I found out a very useful method. You take cooking oil and put a few drops on a bunch of small pieces of sculpey. After it, you put the pieces inside a plastic bag and hammer it until flat, get all the pieces together and repeat until it softens.
After realising how to solve those issues, the process was very nice. Of course I had difficulties with the sculpting due to the lack of experience, but I could figure out at the ent. I just cant make faces properly yet. At first I thought I wouldn't be able to make a face similar to Sen's but it turned up ok Thanks to the hair. I also tried to measure some elements, but just like drawing, When I try to take measures the result is worse. Maybe this happens because I feel more restrained and I get less expressive results. When I don't take measures and use just the visual reference from the other hand, I tend to create better pieces.
Anyway, I just have to finish padlet and tale pictures of the sculpture and print tomorrow and I'm done!
I'm thinking a lot about how careless I've been this year, not only here but in my life in general. After talking with Michael I can see how me not doing anything affected how I'm seen by people and how much they trust me. It is both new and sad that I reached this point. I'm used to be the person that people rely on. The only way to actually change it is by actions. I'm willing the become what I wanted to be at the beginning of the year as a student and a person. I need to seek motivation somewhere to keep me progressing instead of being stuck in my process like I am.
A picture of the sculpting process, I decided to use Super sculpey at the end. It is much better to handle then clay and it wil be nice to have a baked model to show on friday.:

I started with pictures of my sculpture so I can send to the printing shop in time to add to the portfolio I also made two gifs with a blue background of the sculpture, but I didn't really like it. The photos don't show well the details of the sculpture. I also came up with a final thought about the original picture. The "zero gravity man"is man in constant movement. Even thought the outcome of the project is a series of pictures, the concept of no gravity implies that the object it self is in constant movement because with no gravity there are no forces countering your movement, therefore, this sculpture is a representation of constant movement. This is kind of crazy because, since it is not part of my original thoughts but it relates a lot with the project.
Coming home I decided to make a stand for the scupture It can be delivered tommorow. It is pretty simple. A piece of wire braided holded by a screw and a piece of meal on a piece of wood.

referral reflection: I decided to make GIFs with a little movement just to express even more the idea of the sculpture. Plus I took a blue background because it's a refence to the skyes. I aso did an experement which I quite liked with the scupture with inverted colors on one GIF. Even with the amount of detail wasn't the one that I wanted It can still showcase the sculpture. For the one that has the inverted version I tried to follow the origina picture of Sen Mitsuji. To create the feeing of movement I used a method I learned with my father. You basically take a bunch of photos of the object (from 2 to 6), and move on one axis the camera very slightly. After you take the photos you use a reference point, like the head, and allign all pictures and make a gif. That way the slight differences of the photos create the motion. It is super cool I think . I'm seen a lot of peope doing this on social media and advertising recently. I chose to make a square Gif so it fits better the format for posting on Instagram, Facebook, etc.

Referral reflection: I just printed the pictures and wrote the personal statment today for the portfolio. I tried my best to get good prints, I hope this time it ooks better. At least I think it does. After printing I Cut all the images and tapped with doble face tape on the tripex sheets. the only one that I wil be missing is on the sculpture. It was super expensive also. If I did it right on the first time It would be so much better. Less money and stress. I must start to realy work on my organization!!
About the statment. I was very confused about how to write down my ideas. I then made a draft to guide me in the body of the text. I think I could be as honest as possible in it. I will still see if I want to add or take out anything, but I don' feel that I'm going to do it. I hope that Kevin and the foundation tutors can understand what I wrote and theuy like it.
