Skye Pennington is the heiress to a fortune coming from her families oil wells. Whilst summering in Seaville, New York, she meets Buddy at his job at Sweet Mouth Beach Shack. They quickly hit it off and begin dating. She is much more classy than Buddy which causes some problems between everyone.

Frank Trenker

Frank Trenker is Buddy's estranged grandfather. After abandoning Buddy's mother and his grandmother when they immigrated to America, Mrs. Boyle distrusts him. Skye is first introduced to him when Buddy takes her on their first date to impress her.

Nick DeLucca

Known for his rotund shape and yellow tinted sunglasses, Mr. DeLucca is a journalist, who while on the hunt for "Gentlehands", a retired Nazi prison guard, stays with Skye Pennington's family for a period of time. This is a case of personal interest to him, as "Gentlehands" is reported to have killed his cousin during the war.

Almost 30 Years Ago

This book was written about 30 years ago, so the subject of reformed war criminal was a topic on the minds of the citizens, or at least M.E. Kerr. This is quite interesting to think about, as today we are dealing with the same problems. While Syrian refugees are entering the country, legally or not, we Americans have to consider what the consequences would be if a war criminal from Syria was to come and live as our next-door neighbor? If they are minding their own business and not causing any harm to anyone, as Mr. Trenker was in the book, can we justify locking them away for crimes that weren't committed against us? Some would say you can, some that you can't. it's all dependent on who you are.

Skye's Persistence

After rumors began to circle about Trenker's past, people began to become concern for Buddy and Skye's safety at his house. This escalated to the point that Skye's family pulled Buddy aside and asked him to stop going to and keep Skye from going to Montauk. Buddy reluctantly agrees for the safety of his girlfriend, but Skye is not one to be told what to to, and visits Frank several times after this, to the dismay of her family.

The End of The End, and New Beginnings.

Regardless of Skye's independence and persistence, she is unable to stop DeLucca from effectively burning all of Frank Trenker's bridges in New York. After the media blowup, Buddy visits Trenker's Montauk home to find just what he expected. it's abandoned, trashed an ransacked by police and persecutors. He is sad, as is Skye, but knows its the best option to keep him safe.
