I chose the topic because I have spent my five years as an educator working in underserved communities and with students in the foster care system. This padlet will assist educators and school counselors with becoming familiar with the issues students in the foster care system may face. For example, the resources on this padlet will help foster students with a stable school environment, bridge the communication between schools during times of transitions, promote resilience and identify protective factors, and collaborate with foster/biological family and community stakeholders.

According to the American School Counselor Association (2018), school counselors should be knowledgeable about the foster care system and resources provided to them. Children in the foster care system face many obstacles, so it is imperative for school counselors to help them succeed. Children in foster care can struggle academically because of trauma and a lack of guidance compared to their peers. Lastly, school counselors have a duty to meet the needs of all students.

American School Counselor Association (2018).

Students in the foster care system are constantly facing many struggles and battles that they cannot quite overcome by themselves. School counselors can help them succeed by listening to their needs, checking in on them weekly, and going above and beyond to ensure they are accomplishing their academic goals. “School counselors should be aware of the barriers related to access that exist for students in foster care and should be intentional in taking steps to remove any inequities” (Wissel & Brinser, 2020, p. 171). Lastly, school counselors should recognize their foster care students’ strengths and help them with them strategies on excelling mentally and emotionally.

Brinser, H. & Wissel, A.

Marginalized populations of students seldom have advocates to support their educational needs. Many of these young students do not receive messages of hope through hard work from anyone (Nerenburg, 2019). It is our job as educators to be the voice for all students. “A positive PK-12 education experience has the potential to be a powerful counterweight to the abuse, neglect, separation, impermanence and other barriers these vulnerable students experience” (Students in Foster Care, 2016). It is imperative for school counselors to build relationship with students in the foster care system, so they feel inclusive.

Nerenberg, J. (2019).
T. Campos Interview

I decided to interview my colleague Tanya Campos at Democracy Prep Public Schools that has worked with students in marginalized populations. Tanya has been an elementary school teacher for three years and she has also taught at the post-secondary level as a college professor. Ms. Campos is currently the bilingual first grade teacher at Democracy Prep Public Schools at the Stewart Campus.

My topic about working with students in foster care is important to Ms. Campos because she has taught several students in the foster care system. “Students in foster care should be treated with extra love and compassion” (T. Campos, personal communication, July 20, 2022). Ms. Campos recently had a student in her classroom that was in the process of being removed from their family. The student’s behavior changed and they started to exhibit signs of wanting attention by disrupting the learning environment (T. Campos, personal communication, July 20, 2022). Ms. Campos did not give up on the student, but in fact immediately contacted the school counselor to create an action plan for the student.

Three best practices that helped improve the student’s behavior were:

Building a positive relationship with the student.

Ms. Campos held weekly lunch bunches with the student to get to know the student on a personal level.

 2. Social and emotional lessons.

The school counselor taught self-regulation lessons to the student weekly.

 3. Creating a safe learning environment.

Ms. Campos ensured she followed the same schedule daily; making her classroom a structured environment.

During the interview, I informed Ms. Campos of the increased number of children in the foster care system in Texas. Ms. Campos stated, “It is very disheartening to hear those statistics, but as educators we can assist students by establishing a positive classroom culture by making all students feel welcomed and loved” (T. Campos, personal communication, July 20, 2022). Overall, as educators we have to be understanding of students’ situations in foster care by being flexible and an advocate for them.
