Adeline's relationship with her father and family is very abusive as she is 'full of dread' and wonders 'what I did wrong' when returning home. This from the outset suggests fear of visiting/seeing her family. This is further displayed when her father encourages self-depreciation as she thinks she was 'only one determined enough to enter' and he says 'but that's a good answer'. Furthermore, her father is extremely opinionated and controlling, as suggested in the repetition of 'you will' when talking about her future. Her father is very patronizing toward her when 'he scoffed' at the idea of her being a writer. Finally, a hierarchical disconnect is established between her and her family when she 'she depicts her father in an almost godly light as she is 'summoned' by him and shes enters the 'holy of holies'.
