2024 Break-Up Letters by Beth Hughes

Thankfully, 2024 wasn't all bad. But my writers were still ready to bid it farewell. And that is exactly what WMHS' Creative Writing I & II students did. You know how we sometimes use the line "It's not you; it's me" when we're ending things? Well, once again, 2024, it was ALL YOU. Take a look at the Dear John letters our creative writers fired off to 2024. Enjoy!

Dear 2024*,

I am tired of dragging through this horrid relationship. It's not me. It's you. The world has only become a worse place with you in it. For me, personally, you have brought more suffrage and misery. First of all, the marching band could not go to BOA (Bands of America) this year. Then, I tried to save this dumpster fire of a relationship, but you insisted on giving me horrible back pain when the track season started, so I couldn't run at meets, which made me unqualified for the freshman-sophomore meet which I was looking forward to running in. And to get political, you set up 2025 in a silly way. America will be a less ideal place for people like me, my friends, and people who have the misfortune of being born a woman, or being different from standards you failed to break, though I would not expect one single year (let alone a century) mend vast amounts of errors for social reform. I still do not appreciate what you did there, I feel you didn’t set the future up very well. While I have been having a delightful time pointing out just a few of your many, many flaws, I will still acknowledge the joy and happiness that we shared through various ways this year. The entertainment industry had some great progress, most notably the minecraft movie trailer, and my personal favorite show “helluva boss” got another season. You had your ups and plentiful downs, but it's really time for us to part ways.

*Note: I was talking to 2024 as if it was the embodiment of all the events that happened

Hey, 2024.

So, I think we both knew this was coming. I mean, this has just been an absolute disaster. You have to admit, it just felt like we were dragging our feet to make it to December. Summer seemed to last for a second, but I still feel like September lasted an eternity. Except for 2020–oh, God, 2020–you might be the most boring, yet still so eventful year I’ve ever experienced. I’m not going to pretend like what we had was all that awful, though. So, let’s get the good parts–the reminiscing–out of the way so I can tell you what went wrong.

Okay, so. Let’s get on with this, because I know neither of us want to be having this conversation. For starters, that solar eclipse last spring was absolutely amazing. It was really one in a hundred, and I have to give you credit for that much. You showed me so many things, so many shows and movies and experiences that I can’t pretend that there weren’t parts of you that I loved, but those are so small compared to the things that went wrong. I mean…November. Need I say more? Let’s move on! You were so dramatic. You know that, right? I mean, from Beyoncé to Taylor Swift, it was like you had an issue with everybody.

I have to say, this didn’t feel like one year. You had a way of splitting into three phases. I’d say January-March me would feel very differently about you than I do, that’s for sure. She’d probably be shocked I feel this way about you, because she had such high expectations for you. There were so many changes this year. My friends are completely different, and so are my interests. If the girl you met in January could see me now, breaking up with you like this.

Well, I guess that’s all I’ve really got for you, 2024. You really disappointed me, but at least you had a couple highlights. Maybe next year will make up for you.

Cheers!

Dear 2024,

You were better than most, possibly even great but it's been fun and now, I am just tired of having to wait around for more exciting things to happen to me! Well, not to be harsh but you’ve almost been a little boring after everything that's happened. Like in September, I was in the Italian exchange program and don’t get me wrong that was amazing but the months until February when we all go to Italy has been the longest wait of my life! And when Marching band ended, knowing it is my last year of doing Color Guard at the high school, the whole time in between I was feeling depressed about not getting to see my friends next summer. Or here’s the best one, possibly not being able to be in the Spartans Drum Corps in April.

However, we had some good times, and I will treasure them forever. Remember Band Camp and my cabin sisters? They made me feel so special and like I was good enough to be on the team after I felt my coach implied otherwise. Or when Arianna from Italy came and became more than just a friend, a partner in life, a sister who would help me through anything. That was a blast. Oh, I almost forgot! The time when I met my cousin's girlfriend, who is a total sweetie!

So I guess what I am trying to say through all this is thank you 2024, we’ve have our ups, our downs, our whole a** turnarounds but above all it's time for a change and I am tired of waiting.

But don’t worry! Its you not me so…

See ya!

2024,

I must let you go darling, I didn’t think you’d do me this way, having to give up the city view from my porch, stepping out every time I had a hard day, mellowing my arms into the dark brown wooden ledge as day dimmed into night and hearing the whispers of trees moving left and right. The breeze of freedom from a hard day seemed to cool my feelings while my eyes would shut. I didn’t think I’d give it up. I still can’t believe I walked home from school that day drenched in drops of water that fell too hard from the sky, I was pissed as the tires of each car drifting onto each puddle of water and lifting it into the air. As much as I don’t want to remember the early times of 2024, I did live, By season I’d have different feelings about you, I hated you in Dec-Feb but loved you when spring arose and your flowers sprayed hints of natural fragrance, and lastly the blush skies, Although I left my city I guess maybe you did give me something greater, which was the nature of my new home, on an oven feeling day when the sun crisps through my curtains, onto a new day and seeing the jade-like grass and trees standing in front of me. In 2024 I give gratitude because I got to see different beauties especially in nature,

Well, I guess it’s Goodbye, I must see 2025, but I will remember you.

Dear, 2024.

It's hard to believe it’s come to this but you’ve moved on so I will too. We had many good memories with each other and also sh*tty ones; deciding to do track in the winter and running outside in the snow for miles?? What were we thinking. The relationship that started that year—thank god I’m free. Why did you ever let me walk into that, all of my friends and everyone knew it was gonna end ugly.

Look I won’t lie you had beautiful music for me to scream, cry, and dance up and down to. Literally, at dance some of the music just flowed. Thank you for my first year at Monsters (A dance hip hop convention) those mornings were exhausting and amazing for bonding and working hard. Thank you for making me grow the balls to decide to do my first solo which I won’t be doing with you anymore because I have a new love. That’s right, 2025 is the one who gets to stand by my side when I go on that stage for the solo, but thank you at least for getting me to that point with practicing and being proud of myself.

I won’t lie you were pretty great for helping me push myself and getting on varsity for cross country, you taught me that I don’t find a stress-free life with running the rest of the year with track which I appreciate. You taught me how to spend my time well and you taught me to push myself in ways I didn’t think possible, but like I said earlier it’s time to live with my new love (2025). I don’t want any beef with you even though you kind of sucked (especially in the beginning) but in the end you’ll always probably hold a place in my heart (after all, we dated when I became a sophomore in high school).

Oh and before I forget f*ck you for making me take those math tests freshman year—you know exactly what I’m talking about. F*ck you for making the end of freshman year rough. F*ck you for making me take the PSAT a couple months ago. F*ck you for making time pass so quick and my brother growing up and going to the army even though I know he loves and belongs there. F*ck you for all the times I didn’t feel worthy of love and thank you for all the times you made me happy and okay with myself. F*ck you for it all and thank you for it all, and while I’ll never see you again I do appreciate all that you’ve done for me. I’m not gonna live in the past of you anymore but instead I’m gonna be in the present and the many more relationships to come.

F*ck you and thank you.

Goodbye.

Dear 2024,

Well, it’s been a ride, but I think it’s time we finally call it quits. Only 365 days together, but I’ve finally had enough. We had some great times together: watching Michigan win the National Championship for the first time since 1997 and Jayson Tatum hoisting the Larry O’Brien for the first time ever. We had some fun playing basketball, but some tough times too. We had a fantastic tennis season, but it ended kind of rough. We went to 2 proms together and finished a long Junior Year of high school. Hey, we won that Powder Puff volleyball game, too, that was a great time, especially when I won MVP.

But, 2024 with all those ups we had a lot of downs too. The Patriots suck and the Red Sox suck. We had to deal with one of the most stressful elections in the history of our country. There’s wars going on all over the world with no end in sight. You gave me the flu for over a week, right before Christmas! I missed so much basketball that I completely lost my role and had to scrape and claw my way to getting any minutes I could. You were the end of a lot of things for me, too. AAU is over now, thanks to you and I’ll never get to put that jersey on again. College applications, now those were fun. Just kidding, they were awful. Hopefully dumping you marks an end to that process. My new relationship with 2025 is scary, but it could lead to so many fun opportunities. A final tennis season and the end of basketball to look forward to. The start of college, senior prom, and graduation. All these things you could never give me. Goodbye 2024, I’ll look back on our relationship fondly, but it’s time to move on.

2024.

I don’t know what to say. There were some moments where I absolutely loved you, and others when you did me so dirty. You’re definitely better than 2023, but you’ve also f**ked me over so much. For starters, the whole family fiasco with the cousins and uncles that occurred during April break completely ruined my entire spring and part of summer. You made my uncle and I not on speaking terms for such a long time, and just so much drama that went on. Not cool, man, not cool at all. And don’t get me started on making me relive so many of the horrible 2023 memories that I’d done so hard trying to avoid. Like did that make you feel better about yourself? Do you feel well accomplished about that? Was that your idea of an achievement? Oh, and let’s not forget my ankle—the injury that completely f-ed up and ruined the rest of my year. I’ve had endless sprains before and they barely even lasted two weeks! But this one? I sprained it back on August 7th, wore a stupid cast thing, upgraded to a whole-ass boot, then had to wear a brace, did PT for weeks, went to endless doctor appointment, took so many different tests, and guess what? It’s still not healed. And we’re in January 2025! What the heck man? And that’s not even all! I didn’t even touch base on the pain that I’ve felt with this stupid sprain. The inability to go up the stairs or even just standing up after a period of sitting without there being a throbbing sharp pain. Hell I felt pain even just sitting down, doing nothing! It would swell up like crazy and would look so discolored even after past the 6 week mark. It was a sprain, for Asahi’s sake (see what I did there)! It wasn’t even broken or fractured!! Even the doctor was confused, bro. They took one look at my ankle, 2.5 months after the injury date, and straight up said “It’s not supposed to look like that, nor be causing this much pain still.” But you know what, man, whatever. You probably don’t even care and are just laughing your ass of right now. Hope my pain and suffering was entertaining enough for you.

Although, even with all those somewhat horrible moments (including some that shall not be named—see what I did there? Ok, I’ll shut up now lmao), I can’t forget and appreciate the good memories I had this year. Such as going to Canada to visit my mom, siblings, and her side of the family for the first time since 2022. Or all those fun marching band moments—the trip to Maine, the parties, the long endless hours together, etc. I also met such great friends that I can be completely comfortable and myself around, including my boyfriend. And for those memories, I am extremely grateful. So thank you, 2024. For not sucking a$$ too much.

Dear 2024,

It's not you -- it's me. Actually, scratch that. I'm done being nice. It's definitely you. After a full year of this exhausting relationship, I've decided it's time to move on. You were chaotic, unpredictable and… well, a little toxic.

You came in January 1st, whispering empty promises of being 'different.' "I'm your year," you vowed, and waltzed in like some over confident politician. Full of gleaming resolution and fresh starts and new chapters. And for a moment, I almost believed you. But by March, you'd already began spiraling out of control. Whether it was political drama, heatwaves, or UFO sightings, you threw curveballs at me so quickly I barely even realized how quickly the (very attractive, might I add) 2025 was creeping up. Different chaotic events were tossed up like it was a movie showing, and I didn't have any popcorn, so it was not the most enjoyable.

But, I'll admit you weren't all bad. You gave me moments of growth and a few lessons about patience (which I definitely need to deal with you), friendship, and adaptability (I'm adapting, and moving on to 2025; he has a six pack!!). Plus I'll remember the small victories, like finding the courage to tackle new challenges and seeing the happiness in little things. Let's be honest. You didn't give me much to work with.

But now I've got my sights set on 2025. He promises fewer surprises, more stability, and he's got a killer hair flip. Plus, he told me himself, he's my year.

Take care, 2024. I hope you know this is for the best. Thank you for the memories!

Sincerely,

Zaena :)
