I interviewed a 2nd grade teacher, a retired teacher of the gifted, and my principal about their views on these topics.

"Flexibility is the key component to collaboration", said Cindy, Barbara, and Stephanie. The most important factor for all three interviewees was the ability to be flexible when collaborating with co-workers. When one teacher thinks they are right or that they know best, it undermines the effectiveness of collaboration. This goes for co-teaching as well. Respect for other professionals and flexibility in your methods make for the most beneficial collaborative practices. My principal spoke at length about how the best teachers are those who can change and adapt in varying circumstances. This ability is seen in collaboration and co-teaching.

Personalities must mesh is a recurrent theme with regards to co-teaching. It can make or break the experience for all involved if the teachers cannot interact effectively in class and behind the scenes. Co-teaching is common today and the teachers I interviewed have both had years where they co-taught. Sometimes, it can work wonderfully, but it depends greatly on the teachers involved and how well they get along. If their personalities are easy going and they are friends, it can be a very fun environment for both teachers and students. It the pairing is bad however, it can be a struggle for all.

The teachers I spoke with had very little to say about consultation. They felt that their skills were undervalued. The classroom teacher mentioned that her experiences with consultation were limited to parent-teacher interactions and informal discussions with other teachers. The gifted teacher spoke about consultation as a teacher who does lots of pull out groups, she likes to consult with her students' classroom teachers about their curriculum, the learning styles of the students, and sometimes offer strategies to help enrich curriculum and differentiate lessons for the gifted students.

In all areas, all three people mentioned the importance of being open-minded when it comes to working together with other teachers, administrators, and parents. Like other professionals, teachers can get set in their ways. Being open to new ideas and being willing to adjust your teaching style, techniques, and attitudes can greatly all parties when it comes to working together.
