Did he recognize the damage this action could do to his marriage... to Juliet?

Romeo is doing this because the family feud brewing between the Montague and Capulet families has finally escalated to apparently-irrepressible violence. Romeo's blind rage coupled with a sense of honor and familial duty further complicates his relationship with Juliet. Tybalt's murder all but guarantees future bloodshed.
