This was very interesting to me as whilst i knew a good story could make you laugh or cry the actual science behind it is fascinating. But to relate back to Governance by using functional story telling and how you can use this in meeting to get the outcome you need

This talk shows that storytelling is a powerful leadership tool because it engages people emotionally, not just intellectually. Stories help build trust, explain complex decisions, and guide behaviour, provided they are used ethically and transparently.

The concept of emotional investment is particularly relevant where policies and change initiatives can create uncertainty or resistance. Stories help people understand why decisions are made, making outcomes feel purposeful rather than imposed. Phillips’ idea of functional storytelling emphasises leader responsibility in that stories should be chosen intentionally to build trust, clarity, and confidence.

Working in the not-for-profit sector, storytelling is often used to communicate the impact of our work to funders, government stakeholders, members, and potential employees. I found it interesting to learn about the science behind why storytelling is so effective.

The talk reinforced that stories are much more than a communication tool; they have a measurable impact on how people engage with information, build emotional connections, and retain key messages.
