Pretend like you do not understand what you just read and ask them to explain it to you. This is one of the simplest methods to help your check with their comprehension while also being an engaging, meaningful activity for the two of you. This can be a simple picture book, or a chapter book that you read nightly. Base the book on your child's reading level so that it is not only interesting for them, but challenging as well. I pass out the vocabulary cards to random students and have them read the definition and the rest of the class guesses at the word. We then discuss them and pause during our class reading of the story to talk about them again. We have a second read-through of the story during the week. At the end of the week, I "quiz" them by reading the definitions while they guess the words. I then ask for something to explain the words in their own way as well. The kids using start a conversation about at least 2 different words that really helps them learn the new word. It is a quick, fun activity they really enjoy!

A favorite game from this list is Nonsense. This really invites the child to be engaged. They close their eyes and listen as I read a familiar story or sing a familiar song, but occasionally I change the words or sounds and they need to catch that change. This is a lot of fun for both the children and myself. I can swap sounds in words, completely change words or change the order of the words. Fun and full of learning.

Name Syllables. We sit in a circle and say each child's name clapping out the syllables. Each child has a turn to do their own name (first middle and last if they would like) and as a class we clap through their first names. It is a lot of fun and I find the kids do it through the day and sometimes the next during any free moments. It really helps build awareness of the parts of words.
