Hayley Kiyoko's album, Expectations, shows the audience a variety of complex details into her love life. Ever since her release of Girls Like Girls in 2015, she has been openly queer and singing queer songs for the youth of today. She's even been dealing with post-concussion syndrome through all of that singing! "She dealt with post-concussion syndrome for two years. “I’m still on medication for it,” she says, “but this is my first year [since then] that I can think and multitask and it’s amazing.”(Spanos). In this song, Hayley explains to the girl that she is confused on whether or not the girl has feelings for her because she is out having fun with this guy. Hayley Kiyoko even tells Genius, "I was going through this experience. This girl, I really cared about her, and she kept playing with my emotions and feelings. You want to like them, and you want them to like you, but it is also a weird situation where she didn’t love herself enough to be with me."("Hayley Kiyoko"). So when Hayley sees her at a party with the guy, she is confused and asks, "I'm just curious, is it serious?". This prompts a discussion between the two of them on whether or not they are really right for each other if the girl cannot admit her feelings for Hayley. Hayley says this to Genius about how she solved it, "And you can’t teach someone that, and so also you have to learn to respect yourself enough to learn when to walk away from the situation." ("Hayley Kiyoko"). This song is intended for people that have been affected by confusion in a relationship or struggling with their sexual orientation. Hayley Kiyoko's song, Curious, shows the audience a variety of complex details into her love life. Her relationship between herself and a girl will be presented during her music video and lyrics by use of pathos and ethos language.

Analysis of Music Video and Lyrics using Ethos

The music video starts out with the girl and the guy getting out of an Uber. Before she can get out, she checks her texts. You can see that she's texting Hayley. Basically, Hayley asks if the girl can come over and the girl says no she can't because she's sick. So, this hurts the credibility of the girl. The girl is obviously lying about being with the boy, so she feels that Hayley would get angry with her if she were to find out about the relationship with the guy. The guy says to the girl, "Come on. You're beautiful". This implies that they are in fact on a sort-of "date". They walk into the house party holding each others waists. Hayley then sings, "I can handle things, like I wish that you would". Hayley says this because she sees how the girl is ignoring her and she basically says that the girl needs to handle this and figure out her feelings before coming back to her. She further backs that up with, "You've been out of reach. Could you explain? I think that you should". Hayley is further saying that the girl has been out of reach, what's happening with her? Are they okay? Hayley then says, "I'm just on the floor like a model. Been looking through the texts and all the photos. {But don't you worry, I can handle it} (2x)" Hayley is saying that she just on the floor waiting for the girl to talk to her again and while she's doing that, she's just looking through all of her memories together. Later on at around 3:03, the girl grabs Hayley's hand and leads her somewhere. The girl wants Hayley back which puts an even more strain on her reputation because she is so jealous that Hayley (the girl that she left for a guy) is with another girl. The girl is a toxic person that feels the need to control people even when she's not with them. This first part (0:24-1:15) deals with the girl's dependability and reputation. This girl that Hayley is talking to is not a very good person if she's going to parties with other people and lying about sickness when Hayley wants them to be together. The girl may have some internal issues about her sexuality but on the outside she looks cold and unforgiving.

Analysis of Music Video and Lyrics Using Pathos

After 1:15, it becomes an emotional cry for understanding from Hayley. She just wants to know what's happening between her and this girl. Hayley says, "I'm just curious, is it serious?". Hayley is anxious and a little bit angry that the girl won't just come out and say her feelings towards her. This shows that Hayley really wants the girl to express her attraction towards her. Hayley then says, "You said you wanted me, but you're sleeping with him". Hayley knows that the girl is seeing this guy and Hayley is jealous of him. She's jealous that the girl doesn't have to come out to be with him. All Hayley wants is to see if the girl really likes her enough to come out of the closet and reveal her true self to her. This connects with the audience at this point. Everyone has had a point where they feel jealous that their crush is with another person or not with them. Hayley says, "I don't believe you, you ain't been loving me right". This girl really hasn't been loving Hayley right. She has lied about being sick, she's been with another guy, and now she's out in public with him at a party that Hayley is at! This shows poor character on the girl's part (Ethos) and Hayley pointing that out and showing her jealousy and pointed aggressiveness shows her real emotions towards the girl (Pathos). At this point the mood in the music video shifts to a more serious/deep mood. Hayley then sees the girl with the guy and the girl looks back at Hayley looking a little bit guilty but with a little bit of superiority. Later on in the music video, Hayley is seen dancing with a bright colored shirt and her back-up dancers are also wearing bright colored shirts. This represents a light hearted mood and makes the audience feel energetic and happy. It seems like after she shoved the girl's hand away, she finally became self-aware that that girl was a bad person for her with a bad personality. After that in the music video we can see that the girl sees Hayley with another girl. The girl gets jealous, sad, and angry. After seeing Hayley talking to another girl, the girl grabs Hayley's hand and leads her somewhere. The girl wants Hayley back which shows a jealousy because the girl is so jealous that Hayley is with another girl. Hayley and the girl are kissing in a bathroom after the girl leads them there. This shows some attraction that Hayley still has for the girl even though the girl is leading her on. Pathos represents the kissing as something that the audience can remember and reminisce about. It gets them to really think about their feelings about their first kiss and shows that they are finally "back together" in a sense. There are flashbacks of memories from Hayley's point of view. The girl looks younger than what she looks like in the music video. It seems they were in a relationship before the thing with the guy happened. Hayley throws her (playfully/roughly) against the mirror and looks a little angry and she starts kissing her aggressively. This shows maybe a little bit of anger at the memories and at the girl. Hayley then whispers, "I'm just curious, is it serious?". Afterwards, she leaves the bathroom. This then leaves the girl sad and confused. I think at this point Hayley finally realizes that she is better than the girl and should just leave her if all she's going to do is lead her on and try to make her jealous. Pathos shows us that most people have had a point where they've had to make a hard decision and finally leave someone or stop talking to someone because they were a bad match for them.

Overall Conclusion of the Music Video and Lyrics

The girl in this music video started out as a liar, as a cheater, and an overall toxic person. Hayley spent hours upon hours "Looking through the texts and all the photos" and wondering if the girl ever really loved her. The girl obviously didn't if she thought that flaunting her new "date" in public was a good idea. The girl never really loved Hayley. This whole song is about waiting for a girl that will never come out of the closet because either she never liked Hayley or she's not brave enough to come out of the closet for her. The lesson is that you need to leave people that bring you down and don't respect you. "I learned to be like, “OK, I have got to walk away from this” ("Hayley Kiyoko").
