Students in difficult can take ispiration from the other and with a right organization from the teacher everyone can feel himself useful to the groups. Moreover, when we use collaborative strategies sometimes happens that take place some conflicts and it's a very educational experience learn togheter to solve the problems. Last week I have work with my student with collaborative strategies to create a law. My student had to decide how form the group. One of them proposed to use the idea "If you want be part of this group, i can give away to be part of it". The idea is terrific but when they have use it, they hunderstood how it's difficult

I absolutly agree: when I get students to collaborate, I can address the diversity of learners in the classroom. When pupils do Maths's exercises, they can ask their friend for help. I usually say: " who doesn't feel sure? If you aren't sure, you can choose a friend who has just finished and he or she can guide you. Yor friend won't give you the solution, but simply suggests you how to reach the solution". My pupils are used to work in pair or in group. Sometimes we go out our class and we fly in edMondo, a virtual 3d world for teaching and learning of Indire. So, we work in a collaborative way with other pupils far away from us in the real life.

Students can also share their mathematical difficulties with the whole class and express their cognitive conflicts by working on their own, but only by following specific rules. Some collaborative activities and methods we can use in the classroom is to divide the class into promiscuous groups or even motivate the students work individually, using mathematical softwares and paper sheets made properly by the teacher. The students can also share their thoughts and present the results of their activities to the whole class. We can also motivate the students by using outdoor activities. We can also divide the class into homogenous groups so as the students can help each other more efficiently.

I use cooperative learning quite often , especially pair job that is very easy to set and can be done after a theoretical explanation, for instance. This morning in my 11th grade class I explained how they can find the sign of a quadratic equation’s roots with a bottom-up approach and I asked students to help me to find this. We decided we needed to know if the equation had real roots, so we had to study the sign of the delta and then brainstorming we studied the sign of the coefficients and, using Descartes’ rule we finally arrived to a solution. Then to be sure all of them understand what we did, I asked them to work in pairs and solve e similar problem. Can I ask you a real-world problem Next time I’ll give them this “real-world” problem: “You are the manager of a cruise company that is running a service of trips on a river. You that ak hour river cruise goes 3k km upstream and then back again. The river has a current of k-1 km an hour. What is the boat's speed and how long was the upstream journey? When you are sure you can organize a cruise depending on the value of k?“. On Monday I’ll tell you what it will happen…

I think that if they work in group they can have many benefits: first of all they decide in some way their pace, they must be active (especially if the group is small) and they learn better as they have to explain their idea and they must listen to their mate(s). It is not true that a team of not too brilliant students is weaker than one were there are some brilliant ones: everything depends on how they work together and for instance in this class socializing is very important, as they don’t like each other very much… But they must learn that they have to cope with this situation...

I completely agree with the idea presented in the video. We have often to face different levels of comprehensions in our classroom since not all students have the same bent for catching quickly new information. Collaborative strategies let us overcome this difficulty getting students to share their knowledge, exploiting and improving their skills. Of course we need to weigh the situation, plan the right time for these activities, organize groups of students with not too different abilities and divide tasks considering the student's skills.

I sometimes use cooperative learning, dividing students in groups. During this activity I observe their behavior, if they partecipate, how they work in group and I've noticed that they are more motivated: even shy students participate and the less good at math try to learn because they feel responsible to the group when they shall report. Applying the cooperative learning, students are aware of the importance of the contribution of each to the common work and thus develops mutual respect and team spirit. In the meantime the social and emotional aspects of learning are considered too.

I believe collaborative activities can work in class very well in primary school. For me i can see collaborative learning happening in the context of a written project or a presentation given to small groups of students to prepare. I also think that sometimes cooperative learning can be achieved through questions in class like "how do we proceed from that" or "is it right to do this or that" etc where discussion can occur between students - teacher or between students themselves. In some occasions students might offer a better way to answer their peers than the teacher.

I am not so sure that this is the only way to address diversity, but I know for sure that it is a very convenient way with remarkable results. I try this method with students 15-18 years old and there are many benefits for everyone:

Those who explain, learn better

Those who listen or ask learn better from their classmates because they use the same "language".

The teacher is more sure that many more students understand than if he was only teaching, writing on the blackboard.

But, for this to happen, there must be a rule: An the end of each task, everyone in the team must be able to explain the solution.
Of course, sometimes we face problems such as: a)students may not want to cooperate with each other, or with a certain student, b)students who are not used to cooperative work brake the rules by being offensive or by not accepting other's ideas etc. I know now that any problem has a solution, but in the beginning it was difficult for me.

In my teaching practice I'm definitely increasing the moments of cooperative and collaborative learning because my students are more active and motivated. I often use collaborative activity wherever material can be segmented into separate components. Each group member becomes an expert on a different concept or procedure and teaches his or her concept to the group. For example I use this activity when covering factoring of polynomial. I form base groups of four students. Students count off from one to four, and I distribute a work sheet for each case. The work sheets have five sample polynomials that I have made up for the students to factor, plus a space for each student to make up five problems. Students form new groups by combining with other students who have been assigned the same case number, again four to a group. The students work together to determine what is unique about their cases. They are, in effect, becoming experts in the case to which they have been assigned. In the next step, students develop a teaching strategy to take back to their base groups. At this stage, they make up their own problems. Each student practices his or her explanation with the case group. Finally, the students return to their base groups and teach the case they have been studying. There is no set way in which students must teach their material, so the results are quite varied. This activity helps students understand what teaching mathematics involves. It also leads to interesting classes. Students learn how to work with different partners and begin to see that they can indeed assume responsibility for their own learning.

These are some of my fourteen-year students while they're doing a job in collaborative mode

I have also used group work when organizing a maths games period, where they have to share materials like dice or calculators to play the games. They usually work in groups when given Dienes cubes or other teaching material. Sometimes they find it hard to learn how to share or to respect each other's working pace and not rushing to complete a task before their classmate hasn't even begun to think! I also use peer-assessment where students exchange textbooks and point to one another their mistakes. I think that's a very useful way to help them correct their own work later.

My students and I like to create collaborative activities, like group work. It isn't easy with some 13-14 years old group of students. Some of them take advantage of the oportunety of being together and start talking with each other about other things rather tham work. That's the most dificulty I see when I try this kind of activities. This year I'm glad my classes knows how to work in pars ans in groups: we already made esplorations activities, some of them using the computer, and it tourn out just fine!

Apply the peer tutoring for exercises and to consolidate the knowledge. Or to compensate for the different modes of being: the chatty with the shy, the specimen with those who have difficulties.

Compared to cooperative learning still I have to figure out how to build groups with "each with its own contribution to make." Groups where differences are valued and accepted.

Before I could create in the classroom an atmosphere where there was "respect for everyone, just as it is." Now I can not.

What is holding me back is the being alone. The fear of not being understood. And behold, the classic lecture creates fewer problems.

Although the classes often ask: "we begin to build the class that we want. Where we can all feel good."
But I still have to figure out how.

And then as you evaluate the different contributions? What roles?

Signed: dreamer bear :)

Collaboration need time.
But... I have another class in Algebra for younger students.
I even evaluate them in groups! Last week they had a test in groups. Theyare not familliar in this evaluation. Collaboration is the tool to learn in a different way, appreciate different way of thinking, develop creativity and work ethics and, above all, learn to work well with others to achieve same goal.

I think that collaboration is a quality that is taught and most children in Greece haven’t learned to work together as a team. They misbehave, they talk too loud, best students solve the problem quickly to show that they know, while lazy students don’t bother at all. It’s more difficult and tiring for a teacher to do this, so we prefer the traditional teaching most of the time. I use collaboration and team work mostly on activities, like outdoor ones, or watching a video and discuss about it, or making a small project, but, for the most time, I use traditional methods. I must say I have to try harder and teach them that way of learning!

I believe children need to build up their knowledge and competences only by collaborating and sharing their ideas and strategies, according to their different levels of abilities. At the end of the discussion all the ideas are displayed on a poster where ideas are explicated using children's words on one side and MAths Language on the other side.
