What lengths will we extend to to protect it? The South China Sea contains a cluster of small islands that China made claims to. Legally China does not own those islands. If they did, they would have the legal right to 200 nautical miles surrounding the islands, which happens to be a majority of the South China Sea. Why is this causing problems? Each country legally owns the a certain distance of water around their coasts. If China takes control of these islands then their territorial water with overlap the territorial water of small countries that are in more need of the resources than China. Also, China is showing agression towards ships that take routes through the SCS.
