A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genes has been modified in a laboratory. Scientists remove one or more genes from the DNA of another organism, such as a bacterium, virus, animal, or plant and combine them into the DNA of the plant they want to alter. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature.

By adding these new genes, the plant will express the traits associated with the genes. For example, you can apply genes that express a protein that kills insects.

(” The Organic & Non-GMO Report")

GMO plants are changed in different ways to be insect resistant, virus resistant… That can cause several environmental problems.

First of all, GMOs can be toxic for some animals and insects like bees or butterflies. They are important in the pollination of crops so we can't take the risk of killing them.

Also, GMO will not always be effective, but their toxic legacies will remain.

Another problem, could be the modified plants, they can become invasive species in some natural ecosystems. They can become persistent and weedy in agricultural conditions.

Lastly, GMO put at risk all ecosystems and biodiversity. The nature of GMOs will cause fewer weed flowers and less nectar for pollinators.

In addition, it can carrie problems into water sources and into the air. This exposes different bacteria, insects, and animals to the same factors.

(“The Environmental Impact of GMOs.” One Green Planet)

Nowadays genetically modified crops are grown in 26 nations around the world. However, a majority of European Union nations decide to ban GMOs. Most of the places were GMO is forbidden still allow GMO products, like animal feed to be imported. And other countries like China, Japan and Canada, restrict GMO products, until they pass regulatory standards.

(“Where Are GMOs Grown and Banned?)
