My truth: Throughout my life I have heard people say how Europeans look at us as less educated and arrogant. This all changed when I got to take a trip to Europe last summer. The people were just like us. They spoke with a different accent but they were all kind and help me find my way on more than one occasion.

This story is only partially correct. While professors usually are successful by the time they are professional personnel, it can sometimes be a long journey to get to where they're at. One of my professors in particular has shared that she went to college and after her first semester had a 1.8 GPA. While she went on to become a doctorate degree holder, she first had to overcome this point in her life.

Detroit, Michigan is a Very Worn Down and Impoverished City and It is Dangerous for Visitors.

Before I traveled to Detroit one summer I thought that it would be very worn down and full of criminal activity since my only perception of it beforehand was from news stories I had seen on T.V. about the financial crisis there and the slowdown of the car market. I was pleasantly surprised when I visited to find that the city itself is very clean and very much safe. The people were also really nice and the airport was one of the nicest I have been to.

Breaks Prohibit One From Completing a Task To Its Full Potential

I used to have the mindset that taking breaks was bad and that it only got in the way of completing higher quality work. As I have grown older, I have realized from personal experiences that breaks actually help to complete higher quality work, as long as these breaks aren't too long. Pushing yourself to perfection and never stopping to take time for yourself can be very unhealthy, causing much stress and anxiety. Taking time for yourself with small breaks allows your brain time to recuperate, allowing for more productive work when working on a specific task.

If Someone Says You Can’t Do It, They Are Right, It Is Not Possible.

I grew up in a household where the word of your elders is the ultimate word. In fact, I am the daughter of first generation immigrants. That being said, my parents did not have the best language skills growing up. I inherited their broken English and when I attended school I was put into ESL. I remember in 3rd grade during my student-teacher conference, my teacher told me I would never be able to be on the same English level as other kids. I proved that teacher wrong as I excelled during middle school and high school in advanced and AP classes. If you feed a child with a belief of being unable to do something, then they’ll never achieve it. If you tell them they will succeed they will and that’s exactly what happened to me as my parents encouraged me. The single story of believing you can’t do something because someone of “authority” said so is the most toxic single story that is still being fed to children today.

And one of my best friend's dad served in the army to make something of himself since he grew up very poor. The army gave him a chance to be successful and he is now the CFO of a construction company. Lastly Daniel Patrick Tillman was a professional NFL player who quit his career to serve in the army after 9/11 because he wanted to serve his country. He gave up the life of a millionaire to be a grunt in the US army because he wanted to fight for what he believed in.

Some people and environments create the idea that there is only one path to success. For example, some teachers at my high school thought that if a student didn’t have straight A’s or a perfect SAT score, they wouldn’t succeed. Those are important attributes and can play a role in success but there are also other skills that contribute to success. Being a part of a sports team or working a part-time job teaches time-management and can emphasize the idea of a well -rounded student. Some people and environments never consider the other important attributes that contribute to success.
