“Good-morning, good-morning!” the General said

When we met him last week on our way to the line.

Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of 'em dead,

And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.

“He's a cheery old card,” grunted Harry to Jack

As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack.

But he did for them both by his plan of attack.

This poem talks about a useless Army General. The poet challenges the bias General and thinks that those are in-charge deserves to be in-charge if they make the world safer.

This poem is important because it show the real thing and thoughts about the soldiers cause they have seen the real thing. The poet complains about the people in-charge, he thinks that the people in power deserves it if they can make the world a safer place.

The poem <Peace> is written by Rupert Brooke, he is known for writing about true stories on the battle field, he is also famous about the sonnets he wrote. He is also known as the handsomest young poet at that time. He died in 1915 because of infection of a mosquito bite.

This patriotic poem shows gratefulness for being able to fight the enemy. It showed that peaceful life at home had become boring, that this military opportunity brought honor, and that death was acceptable. The title is ironic but intended to encapsulate the idea that inner spiritual peace comes from fighting for an honorable cause. In hindsight this book reads strangely given what was known about the First World War, but reflects the times in which Brooke lived. Many are motivated by patriotism and "glory."

If I should die, think only this of me:

      That there’s some corner of a foreign field

That is for ever England. There shall be

      In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;

A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,

      Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;

A body of England’s, breathing English air,

      Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,

      A pulse in the eternal mind, no less

            Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;

Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;

      And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,

            In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

It celebrates the actions of men and focuses on the courage shown by the soldiers. This can be seen throughout <The Soldier>. It was written at the beginning of World War I. This piece could almost be considered a piece of propaganda, as it seems to change the negative feelings into positive feelings.

The anguish of the earth absolves our eyes 

Till beauty shines in all that we can see. 

War is our scourge; yet war has made us wise, 

And, fighting for our freedom, we are free.

Horror of wounds and anger at the foe,
