Day 1: Registration and Arrival

• Tens of thousands of young, unmarried girls (maidens) arrive from all over the country and register.

• They are grouped by regions or chiefdoms and accommodated at the Queen Mother's royal village (Ludzidzini).

• Girls are given accommodation and food; some arrive with older female guardians.

Day 2: Training and Orientation

• The girls are briefed on the rules, behavior expectations, and cultural significance of the event.

• Senior women or instructors teach them traditional songs and dances.

• Reeds are prepared for the upcoming collection.

Day 3 & 4: Reed Collection

• Girls walk to the reed beds (can be over 30 km away), cut tall reeds, and carry them back in bundles.

• They do this to show their strength and dedication to culture.

• The reeds are symbolic of unity and purity.

Day 5: Rest and Preparation

• Maidens rest after their journey.

• They clean and decorate their reeds.

• Traditional attire is prepared, which includes colorful beads, sashes, and sometimes breast-revealing outfits as per tradition.

Day 6: Reed Presentation

• Girls carry their bundles of reeds in a grand procession and present them at the Queen Mother's kraal.

• This is the core ritual symbolizing respect, unity, and service to the Queen Mother.

• It is done with singing, dancing, and ritual discipline.

Day 7: Main Dance (Umhlanga)

• This is the highlight of the ceremony.

• Maidens perform the traditional reed dance in full traditional attire.

• King Mswati III watches from the royal box and may choose a new wife (in some years).

• The event is attended by thousands of spectators and dignitaries.

• It celebrates chastity, femininity, and cultural pride.

Day 8: Departure

• After final rituals and farewells, girls return to their homes.

• The ceremony concludes with communal praise and celebrations.
