At my CO-OP, I was able to experience what the Emergency Room was like. Throughout my placement, I was able to experience what it was like to be an EA (their responsibilities and duties). I also got to experience what it was like to be a porter, moving patients from room to room and bringing in stretchers for each room we cleaned. I was able to have some patient interaction (I.e. when they asked for food or a warm blanket). I also got to interact with the ER staff (mostly, nurses).

My favourite coop experience was probably seeing how the hospital functions. One of the coolest things I got to see was probably doctors and nurses working together to prep a room and tend to an incoming trauma. Not only that, but getting to see how things work behind the scenes was also super interesting. Everyone worked together like a well oiled machine. It showed me how every staff member is an integral part in the functioning of a hospital.

My favourite placement experience so far was when I was doing a discharge and I heard the conversation between new parents and their baby. I think there is something special about hearing these kind of things and it made my day!

As well, I got to meet many other great and funny EA's.
-------------------
Reply 1: I totally agree being able to see the behind the scenes of a hospital is such a great experience. When you go to visit you are a patient not a member of the team. (Each allow for a different perspective and insight to be gained, each one unique.)

Reply 2: Having a chance to porter is awesome and it is amazing that you got to do so much.

I was in the Labour & Delivery unit at MUMC, and it was a really interesting and fun experience. It is a really nice unit, with great nurses, doctors, EAs, and healthcare aides. I got to see organs like umbilical cords and placentas, and was there to congratulate mothers who just gave birth. It was such a satisfying moment to be part of the team that saw newborns emerge from the operating rooms and delivery rooms. The last week of my placement in L&D was very busy, and my eyes were opened to so many things. For example, we had to clean several rooms that had MRSA precaution signs, and we had to wear PPE while doing so. I also had the chance to go into ORs and attend c-section surgeries, and that was quite an amazing and meaningful experience! It was a gratifying and unforgettable experience in L&D.

I was the first student to be placed at the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) in Grimsby. In the ER we dealt with a lot of non-urgent care patients. The hospital often needed to use VoyaGo in order to transport trauma patients from WLMH to bigger hospitals like Juravinski and General. My favourite experience working in the ER was meeting all of the staff and patients, even if it was a very quick interaction. One of the nurses lives on her own farm and has chickens so on my second day, I received an 18 package of fresh eggs. Everyone down in Grimsby is so considerate and always treats everyone as equals and apart of the team. My coach Nina was an amazing coach and taught me so many life lessons in such a short period of time.
