I finished a queer romance series call Heartstopper by Alice Oseman over the weekend, the series isn't down put I reead the pages that were posted on Webtoon. I picked this book because I love reading queer romance books and it was a comic which made it easier to get out of my book slump.

One of my main characters is Penny, Penelope. She is an Asian, college student in Texas who has parental issues. Her mom had her really young and because of that she treated her more like a friend than a child. This caused Penny to grow up really fast and be the parent in their relationship. Penny is very maternal because of this and is always prepared for everything. I relate to Penny a lot, I have had to grow up fast too, for different reasons and because of this I am super maternal and caring. Penny and I also have the tendency to over think to much, get upset and snappy sometimes. But we are both caring and nice people deep down inside.

"Penny felt her soul escapee her body. "

Penny has been texting her roommate,Jude, uncle, Sam, and they have met in person but their relationship is all over the phone. They don't want to ruin their relationship by seeing each other in person. Penny has been avoiding the coffee shop Sam works at that Jude frequents. But today she can't avoid not going there at all or she will make a scene.

This is a striking line because it is a cool piece of imagery. Someone soul leaving their body is a way to personify the feelings of anxiety.

Type 3: Character vs. Society

My main character, Zelie, is a daughter of a maji, people with magical ablities, and has white hair because she is a diviner. All of this stuff has made her a target for hate. Her mother was killled in a raid for being a maji. Zelie's parent and caretakers get taxed because she lives with them and if the taxes aren't paid she will be sent into slavery.

"Free of thee white hair of diviners, Mama Agba could blend in with the other Oreshians, avoid the guards torture. If she didn't associate with us, the guards might not bother her at all"

This quote from the book is right after the guards come to Mama Agba to tax her again for associating with diviners. Zelie is rude toward the guards and after getting in trouble, she thinks about this. How all of everyone's, Mama Agba/her bother/father/the village, problems would go away if she went away.

a) I have finished 3 books in the first quarter, Star girl by Jerry Spinelli, Emergency Contact by Mary H.K Choi, and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi . I also read a series of comics, Heartstopper by Alice Oseman.

b) I am currently reading Children of Virtue and Vengeance, the second book in Legacy of Orisha by Tomi Adeyemi.

c) I read the most a night before I go to bed in my bed. I usually read for at least an hour sometime more.

d) I have been feeling unaccomplished as a reader since I haven't been reading as much as I used to this time last year. But at the time I was reading to cope and I had to cope a lot. Since my life is getting back to functioning, I just hope I don't lose the passion I had for reading.

e) In Quarter 2, I hope to read at least 5 books and to read consistently.

Amari, a main character in Tomi Adyemi's Children of Virtue and Vengeance, deals with a conflict between family and self. She wants to love and respect her family but they keep doing bad things and hurt people she loves and respects. I have also dealt with family against self. My parents aren't open minded and strictly follow the bible. I am not that person and I love people no matter what. They sometimes talk done on people I love and respect and it hurts me to love them because they can't love someone I love.

(I was kinda vague on specific times she dealt with conflict between family and self because I don't wanna spoil some big plot points.)

A big them in this book is following one's heart to the end even if it doesn't work with everyone else. All of the characters follow their heart, sometimes blindly. But they follow their hearts which is important to character development. In chapter 43, Amari is fighting for peace in the war and her best friend is fighting for revenge. She loves her friend a lot but at the end of the chapter Amari thinks, "If the elders won't support my plan to win this war, I'll have to do it myself". This line foreshadows what Amari may do in the upcoming chapters and how she is following her heart.

I have been really into modern mystery books.

2. While currently reading Raven, I am feeling nostalgic. Raven is from the Teen Titans and she has always been my favorite character. I am really enjoying reading a spin-off comic book. Comic books take the stress of reading away that many novels give me.
