(V) Argument Practice (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) by Heather Sheeley

From 1900 to the present, increasing globalization has made transportation faster and easier, but it has also caused pandemics to become more widespread.

Develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which the effects of the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 were similar to, or different from, the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Spanish Influenza epidemic from 1918 to 1919 and COVID-19 from 2019 to today right now, were two very different but also very similar events that happened around the world. The Spanish Flu spread and infected many people just as COVID has been doing. Although they have their differences, they have many similarities. The Spanish Flu originated from an animal, a bird to be exact, but so did COVID, which originated from an animal from a market in China. Another similarity between the two viruses would be, the Spanish Flu and COVID are marked as novel viruses which means it was a new virus which meant no one had immunity. Some other similarities are, Lysol was being used as a disinfectant, masks were and are being worn to public places and around other people to prevent spread of the virus, and there were no vaccines yet made for either virus. Finally, places were closed down due to the viruses and public gatherings were stopped.

The influenza pandemic of 1918 and the Covid-19 pandemic are similar to each other for many reasons. In the 1918 influenza pandemic, everybody, excluding soldiers, quarantined inside their homes. They also wore masks outside and disinfected everything that could have come in contact with the virus. During the Covid-19 pandemic, everybody is supposed to be quarantining and wearing masks. Yet some people refuse to do both of those things. In 1918, people also refused to do those things, resulting in Anti-mask meetings. In both pandemics, public places such as shops, malls, restaurants, schools, and public entertainment establishments shut down. Neither viruses had vaccines. The first flu vaccine came out in the 1930’s but didn’t become widely available until the 1940’s, decades after the Spanish flu pandemic mostly died off. We have yet to come up with a vaccine for Covid-19 but there are many clinical trials being held at the moment all around the world, in search of the vaccine.

The Spanish Flu and COVID-19, although occurring over 100 years apart, were similar ways. In addition, they also had their share of differences. For example, both the Spanish Flu and COVID-19 rapidly spread throughout the world; the Spanish Flu due to the men travelling overseas and living in tight quarters for the war, COVID-19 due to the easy access to fast-paced travel that allows anyone to be anywhere in a matter of hours. Furthermore, a lot of the same safety practices were used during both. Masks and social isolation were used to combat the Spanish Flu and have also been used to combat COVID-19. However, they do have some differences as well. At the time of the Spanish Flu, there weren't any antibiotics to help with other infections. For this reason, the mortality rate was higher than COVID-19. Moreover, people are less cooperative in following health and safety rules now than in 1918. During the Spanish Flu, people recognized they needed to do their part to help fight off the pandemic, but even wearings masks is proving to be difficult during COVID-19. People are treating it like a choice of freedom, when really it's for their safety and the safety of others.

Jack Motto. Planes, trains and subways became a faster and easier way to travel beginning in the 1900s. Although that made traveling a lot more convenient, it also created spaces for viruses to be transmitted. Air travel public transportation requires spending time in lines and in close contact with other people. Surfaces are frequently touched which widens the spread of germs and viruses. To prevent the spread of a viruses, especially during a pandemic, it is most preventable by maintaining social distance and practice good hygiene. Social distancing is seemingly impossible in crowded places such as airports, train stations and subways, therefore any ride sharing can increase your exposure to a virus. The influenza pandemic occurred during world war 1 and means of transportation were not shutdown, creating 2nd and 3rd waves of the virus and creating a devastating and lasting affect of the pandemic. In contrast to Covid, pandemic, airlines, subways and train stations all shutdown to avoid transmission of the virus. The reopening process is occurring slowly in hopes of avoiding and second wave, although most predictions say its inevitable.

Both The Spanish Influenza Epidemic and the COVID-19 Pandemic have a lot to do with transportation. If 1918 they did not have international flights. Since the first case of COVID-19 came from China people had to travel from China to the United States to make it spread. In 1918 the spread was most likely lower because they did not have these international flights.

The Influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 and the current COVID-19 Pandemic are similar in the way there affecting the world because they both are novel viruses, or viruses that no one has a built defense against in their immune system, thus it’s harder to keep Covid and the Spanish Flu contained. Also both COVID-19 and the Spanish Flu pandemics killed tons of people, and tons of Americans. During both pandemics people have doubted the seriousness of the viruses and had refused to wear masks and take proper precautions to stay safe from spreading/getting the virus.

One example is how both pandemics were global pandemics meaning that it infected people not only in one country but in many different country around the world. During 1918 it was said that during the war it could have been transferred from overseas and today the Corona Virus has came from China with a person who had it and traveled back after a visiting trip. Lastly, During both pandemics mask's and distancing yourself from others was used as a way to try to fight the pandemics . These examples show just some of the ways that the 1918 Spanish Flu Influenza and COVID 19 Pandemics were similar

Both pandemics have similarities and differences. For example is it so much easier to travel now then it was when the spanish went around because the spanish flu went around from traveling overseas and in living in smalls space during war. But during Covid-19 you can fly internationally and go on trains. Also the similarities at both times we are required to wear masks when they go out but during both times people protested to not wear masks. Also things that they had to do is everyone distances yourself from others and both viruses there is still yet no vaccine.

Both the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918, and the current Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020, were both similar and different. These events have affected people all over the world in very substantial ways. Though they occurred decades apart from each other, the two remain very similar. Both the Spanish Flu and Corona virus caused millions of people to quarantine inside their homes for long periods of time. Public gathering spaces such as schools, Churches, and theaters were/are shut down for the safety of citizens and to help slow the spread of disease. Masks were also enforced in both pandemics. People then, and now, wear masks to protect themselves and others from the flu, and Covid-19. Along with the urge to wear masks and stay home, came protests. People believe they shouldn’t have to wear masks or stay home because it is a “violation” of their rights. Because of this, during both the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic and the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, people met up to protest in large groups. Along with masks, stay at home orders, and social distancing guidelines, people in both pandemics were also encouraged to disinfect their homes and other possibly contaminated surfaces with household cleaners or sanitizers like Lysol, etc. There was no exact “treatment” for the Spanish Flu at the time until many years later when they finally came out with a vaccine to help prevent you from getting sick. Covid-19 doesn’t have an exact treatment, or vaccine, but the trials for a vaccine are looking somewhat promising. There could be a vaccine similar to the flu vaccine. Despite the two pandemics occurring many, many years apart, in very different times, they were very similar.

Also during both pandemics were were used for protection to stop the viruses from spreading. Another similarity is that during both pandemics groups were apposed to wearing masks. Some of the differences between the diseases are that during the Spanish flu there were no antibiotics and aspirin was given at what we consider to now be a toxic dose, During Covid-19 we have better drug treatments and antiviral medications. Also one main difference is that During Covid-19 we are able to spread information easily about the virus and during the Spanish flu that was very hard. The last difference is the masks that were given out during Covid-19 were much higher quality than the ones given out during the Spanish flu especially for essential workers. -Robert
