Nuffield Research Placements provide engaging, hands-on research projects, where S5 pupils have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation through a well-supervised but independent research collaboration relating to an area of science, quantitative social science, computing, technology, engineering or maths (or a combination).

Placements will take place during the summer of 2023, with prior online learning, 2 weeks in-person working with an industry or university/college partner and up to 2 weeks online completing additional planning and research work after the placement.

This session will take place on MS Teams and will cover an introduction to Nuffield Research Placements, outlining key dates and what it involves. You will also hear from pupils who participated in the Programme last year and will talk about their experience.

A follow-on session will take place in mid-January to offer assistance to teachers and pupils with the application process.

 

It is a 4 year apprenticeship, with full time working in the depot and there is 12 weeks of college across the year split in to 4 blocks throughout the year with additional modules if students don’t have English or Maths qualifications. It is based at one of our leading colleges for land-based engineering.

 

For this apprenticeship we look for individuals who have an interest in mechanics, a general understanding of IT, and preferably 4 GCSE/Nationals at grade 4/C or above including English and Maths. If there are any who don’t meet the criteria for qualifications they may still be considered for the course, as an entry assessment is completed and additional modules can be provided for English and Maths.

About this opportunity:
The cafe is a warm welcoming space in the community, based in the new Wellesley Centre, behind Wellesley Parish Church, Methil. They offer a wide variety of groups and activities for all ages and the cafe offers soups, sandwiches hot/cold drinks and other light meals. 

The cafe is open Thursdays 10am-1pm and Fridays 10am-2pm and volunteers are needed half an hour before opening and the same after closing to help set up/clear up. You can volunteer for either or both days and all or part of the shift. You will be setting tables, taking orders, serving food, clearing tables, loading & unloading the dishwasher, and making hot drinks. If you would like to help in the kitchen with meal prep, this may also be possible.

Experience:  Volunteers should be friendly, approachable, and accepting of all members of the community who may use the cafe. Whilst a relaxed environment is encouraged, please be willing to be neat & tidy whilst volunteering. Previous cafe or retail/customer experience would be useful but not essential as training can be given. Basic literacy and numeracy needed for taking orders, receiving payments, 

Expenses:  Yes - Public transport will be reimbursed up to the cost of a bus local day ticket. For volunteers outside the local area, consideration may be given to reimbursement of a Fife Central bus day ticket. Mileage can also be considered for reimbursement, for local volunteers
