HURRICANES/TROPICAL STORMS

Filmed by Jordan Vargus*
Once a tropical depression's average winds reach 39 mph then the cyclonic winds become a tropical storm and receive a pre-selected alphabetical name.
There are approximately 80-100 tropical storms annually and about half of these storms become full-fledged hurricanes. It is at 74 mph that a tropical storm becomes a hurricane. Hurricanes can be from 60 to almost 1000 miles wide. They vary widely in intensity; their strength is measured from a weak category 1 storm to a catastrophic category 5 storm. There were only two category 5 hurricanes with winds over 156 mph, that struck the United States in the 20th century. One of them was the 1935 hurricane that struck the Florida Keys. Only 14 category 4 storms hit the U.S. and these included the nation's deadliest hurricane - the 1900 Galveston, Texas hurricane and Hurricane Andrew which hit Florida and Louisiana in 1992.
Approximately 90% of all hurricane deaths can be attributed to the storm surge, the dome of water created by the low pressure center of a hurricane. This storm surge quickly floods low-lying coastal areas with anywhere from 3 feet for a category one storm to over 19 feet of storm surge for a category five storm. The strong, at least 74 mph winds of a hurricane can cause widespread destruction far inland of coastal areas, destroying homes, buildings, and infrastructure. Hurricanes are huge tropical storms and dump many inches of rain over a widespread area in a short period of time. This water can engorge rivers and streams, causing hurricane-induced flooding.

Unfortunately, polls find that about half of Americans living in coastal areas are unprepared for a hurricane disaster. Anyone living along the Atlantic Coast, the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean should be prepared for hurricanes during hurricane season. Fortunately, hurricanes ultimately diminish, reverting to tropical storm strength and then into a tropical depression when they move over cooler ocean water, move over land, or reach a position where the upper level winds are too strong and are thus unfavorable.

*There were multiple failed attempts at attaching the video. This is all that was said.

TSUNAMIS

Written by Soumya
North Pacific Coast, Japan - 11 March 2011

A powerful tsunami travelling 479 miles per hour with 10 meter high waves swept over the east coast of Japan, killing more than 18,000 people. The tsunami was spawned by an 9.0 magnitude earthquake that reached depths of 15 mi, making it the fourth-largest earthquake ever recorded. Approximately 452,000 people were relocated to shelters, and still remain displaced from their destroyed homes. The violent shaking resulted in a nuclear emergency, in which the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant began leaking radioactive steam.
At 2:46 p.m., an 8.9 magnitude earthquake takes place 231 miles northeast of Tokyo. (8.9 = original recorded magnitude; later upgraded to 9.0) .The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issues a tsunami warning for the Pacific Ocean from Japan to the U.S. About an hour after the quake, waves up to 30 feet high hit the Japanese coast, sweeping away vehicles, causing buildings to collapse, and severing roads and highways. The Japanese government declares a state of emergency for the nuclear power plant near Sendai, 180 miles from Tokyo. Sixty to seventy thousand people living nearby are ordered to evacuate to shelters.
Usually, tsunamis are a series of ocean waves that are generated by sudden displacements in the sea floor, landslides, or volcanic activity. In the deep ocean, the tsunami wave may only be a few inches high. The tsunami wave may come gently ashore or may increase in height to become a fast moving wall of turbulent water several meters high.Although a tsunami cannot be prevented, the impact of a tsunami can be mitigated through community preparedness, timely warnings, and effective response. The best defense against any tsunami is early warning that allows people to seek higher ground.

Written by Tiana Reid
Taiwan, Asia- February 6, 2016
Taiwan was hit by a powerful earthquake on February 6th, early Sunday morning, while most people were asleep. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 and did extreme damage. The earthquake resulted in the collapse of many building, which injured hundreds of people. People were reported missing after the earthquake, and could not be found through all of the debris. Also there were people that were alive trapped in the mess, that needed to be saved. The death toll keeps rising, as more bodies are found throughout the debris that the earthquake has created when it shook Taiwan.

VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

Written by Jordan Vargus
Volcanic eruptions are one of Earth's most dramatic and violent natural changes. Not only can powerful explosive eruptions drastically alter land and water for tens of kilometers around a volcano, but the resulting sulfuric acid erupted into the stratosphere can change our planet's climate temporarily. Eruptions often force people living near volcanoes to abandon their land and homes, sometimes forever. Those living farther away are likely to avoid complete devastation, but their cities and towns, crops, industrial plants, and electrical grids can still be damaged by the ash.
A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur. Gases and rock erupt through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods. Volcano eruptions have been known to knock down entire forests. An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls.
Fortunately, volcanoes have rests that when detected and analyzed in time, allows eruptions to be anticipated and communities at risk to be warned beforehand. The warning time leading up to volcanic events typically allows enough time for affected communities to implement response plans.
There are many volcanic eruptions happening all over the world, though they have no affect on Florida as there are no active volcanoes located close to Florida. Despite this, there are a few large, nonactive volcanoes that could potentially damage a large portion of the world with their eruptions.
