The symphony is about an exchange with the devil  and through the story, this is shown when the two men robbed the bakery commiting a devious crime. Besides, this classical music is based on the myth of Asuero which is about a jew who was convicted to wander for centuries without ever finding the eternal rest and oblivion.

The short story is full of imagery. One of them is an image of a volcano. It represents something from the past of the husband which is inside, threatening him to erupt at any moment. It is a symbol of unresolved problems, things that are hidden in his uncounscious. While you read the story, you can find a recurrent image of a boat. It represents the life of the husband,  like if he would be floating on the sea of life and at any moment, he could sink. The following quotation supports this idea:

Another symbol in this story is the curse which is represented by the hunger. The curse symbolizes the need to complete unfinished business. The hunger hits the couple and he immediately remembers the original bakery rob. When he did not finish it, he felt like he was cursed with an insatiable hunger.  Karma and Choices play a big part of the story. Any choice made affects the karma you will receive. The husband and his best friend had made the choice of robbing the bakery, as a result, they get cursed.
"I'm still not sure I made the right choice when I told my wife about the bakery attack. But then, it might not have been a question of right and wrong. Which is to say that wrong choices can produce right results, and vice versa. I myself have adopted the position that, in fact, we never choose anything at all. Things happen. Or not." An important asset to the Japanese literature of the 20th century, Haruki has received several noted awards for his fiction and non-fiction works.

Murakami was born in Kyoto, Japan on January 12, 1949. Haruki probably inherited the passion for writing from his parents who were teachers of Japanese literature. Haruki, however, was never a big fan of Japanese literature and was instead under heavy influence of Western culture.  

The short story The Second Bakery Attack is included in The Elephant Vanishes, a collection of seventeen short stories. These stories were written between 1980 and 1991.

 Murakami is an iconic figure of postmodern literature known mostly for his unreal, humorous work focusing on the loneliness and empty mindedness of Japan’s work dominated generation. 

He now resides in The United States and is an enthusiastic marathon runner, a hobby he acquired at the age of 33.

It is she who convinces her husband that they should rob a bakery, and then she provides a shotgun, hockey masks. For that reason she can be consider a mysterious woman.  She asserts herself as the dominant character in the relationship.
At the beginning of the story, the husband had seemed to be a typical male, accompanied in his adventures by his timid wife. Eventhough, when the second robbery occurs, he simply stands there, the shotgun awkwardly held in his tired arms. He pays more attention to his inner-thoughts than the robbery. 
As a couple, they can deal with the curse and finished it. 
"Our hunger--that hunger that had felt as if it could go on forever--vanished as the dawn was breaking...
...We shared a cigarette. Afterward, she rested her head on my shoulder.

"Still, was it really necessary for us to do this?" I asked.

"Of course it was!" With one deep sigh, she fell asleep against me. She felt as soft and as light as a kitten."
