Hello! This is Ms Mai from Seisen International School. I wanted to share a little bit about how we celebrate the new year. The New Years is a little special at my house. We cook all our osechi (special new years food) by the 31st of Dec., and we eat that for the next 3 days. What makes our new years different is that it's also my birthday on the 31st of Dec. Because of this, we eat both osechi and strawberry custard tart during the new years :)

To Ms. Meyer's Grade 1 Class: Here are some responses to your questions from Miss Waser's First Grade Class in New York.

What do we eat at different celebrations?

At Thanksgiving we eat a big dinner with our family and friends. We eat turkey,
dinner rolls, mashed potatoes, stuffing, ham, green beans, cranberry sauce, and
corn casserole. For dessert we eat pumpkin pie, apple pie, and ice cream. We
eat many of these foods on Christmas as well.

For birthdays we usually get to tell our families what we would like to eat for our special dinner. Some of our top choices are pizza, roasted chicken, grilled
cheese, and macaroni and cheese. For dessert we have cake and ice cream.

How do we celebrate birthdays?

On our birthday, we eat cake, we open gifts, we eat pizza, we play games, and we whack piñatas. Sometimes we sing the “Happy Birthday” song and blow out candles on our cake. A lot of people give you cards and sometimes they have money in them. We spend the money on toys or games that we want. On birthdays we have a party at home or a fun place. Some of the fun places we have parties at are the Fun-E Farm (bouncy houses), Bounce (trampolines), and Wood’n Wheels (roller skating). In the classroom we celebrate birthdays every month and we eat cupcakes.

Hope you have great birthdays!!!

How do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?

On Valentine’s Day we give cards to our family to show them that we love and care about them. We also give cards to our friends to show that we value our
friendships. Sometimes we give candy with our cards. Some of the popular
candies are Smarties, lollipops, and Nerds. We make sure we brush our teeth
after! In the classroom we decorate bags to put our valentines in and celebrate
our friendships and teamwork.

Hello From Houston, Texas, USA

Y'all did a great job on your video. On Friday February 26, 2016. Texans in the Houston area will be celebrating Go Texan Day. Schools will allow students to wear cowboy gear. Many have demonstrations of rodeo/ranching skills or speakers come to the schools. Starting in early February different groups will start their trail ride towards Houston. They will ride their horses during the day and camp out at night. The longest trail ride is Los Vaqueros Rio Grande Trail Ride, established in 1973 386-mile ride from Reynosa, Mexico. Then on Saturday, February 27, 2016 they will ride into downtown Houston in a parade. It also includes various bands, drill teams from schools across the area.

The livestock show allows students to show animals they have raised. They can win scholarships to university. The animals are also sold in auction and the student gets that money also.

My family has a long tradition of being involved. Usually as volunteers. When he was in Junior High my was on the Peacock Academy's Trick Riding Team and they preformed before Roy Rodgers' concert. Someone setting up the lights for Roy Rodger's performance flashed a light in the horses eyes when the boys were building the pyramid. The horses bolted and the boys fell. No-one was hurt. Roy Rodgers insisted they get another chance to do the trick and instructed the lighting people to not use the spot light. After in concert he took pictures with each boy. After they were developed, he signed each one and sent them to the boys.

The art show is another way for students to earn scholarships. It was started by Grace Sands Smith my great aunt. This year her great- great- niece earned 1st place for 5th graders in private school in the competition to get in the show. Next year she hopes to actually be in the show.

Canadian Celebrations by Ms. Simpson's Grade 2's

We have the same celebrations as your grade 1 friends in New York below. Here are some more of our favourite celebrations!

Easter: It always starts on Sunday in March or April. At Easter the Easter bunny hides chocolate eggs in your house. The Easter bunny gives great gifts.

Mother's Day: The day of Mother's Day is the second Sunday of May. Mother's Day lasts for 1 whole day. Moms can lay down and do what they want to do. They get gifts.

Father's Day: It's on the third Sunday of June. Father's Day is where fathers don't have to do anything. Father's Day also means that they have fun and kids make stuff for them.

Canada Day: Canada Day is July 1. Whenever there is Canada Day there is a parade! Canada Day is celebrating Canada's birthday. At night people light up fireworks. On Canada Day people wear red and white shirts.

Halloween: Halloween is celebrated on October 31. People carve pumpkins and put them on their porch. People dress up on Halloween. People go to homes to get candy. They say trick-or-treat.

Remembrance Day: Remembrance Day is on November 11. Remembrance Day is important because we remember the people who fought for us. We wear poppies. We have an assembly at school for Remembrance Day. We sing O' Canada.

Christmas: Christmas is on the 25th of December. You put a Christmas tree up and put lights, ornaments and a star at the top of the tree. You spend time with your family and friends. We also get presents from family and Santa. You open presents. We often have snow for Christmas. You can play in the snow. You can make snow angels and have snowball fights with family and friends.

It is Groundhog's Day here is the USA. Groundhog's day is a day when some famous groundhogs come out of their burrows (homes) and look around. If they see their shadow it frightens them and they return to their burrows for six more weeks of winter. If they do not see their shadow they may stay out of their burrow and look around. We will soon have spring then. The groundhogs did not see their shadow today so we are looking forward to an early spring. ~ From Mrs. Harmann's Digital Kindergarten Class Hartland Wisconsin USA.

Our first grade class celebrates a variety of holidays. Today (February 2, 2016), we are celebrating Groundhog day. On Groundhog's Day, a groundhog in Pennsylvania is released in the morning. If the groundhog sees his shadow, it is said we will have six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, it is said that spring will come early. On December 25, we celebrate Christmas where Santa Claus brings the good boys and girls presents. On the last Thursday in November, we celebrate Thanksgiving. We take this time to celebrate things that we are thankful for and care about (i.e. family, friends, church, etc.). In May and June, we celebrate Mother's Day and Father's day where we take the time to show gratitude for our parents. In addition to these celebrations, we also celebrate Easter, Halloween, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, July Fourth, and New Year's. We hope this helps you in your Celebrations study.
