Speaking with professionalism- I think when you speak with a higher standard (not swearing, using correct grammar, appropriate conversation at the right time) you appear more professional than someone who does the opposite.

Dressing appropriately - This is especially important if you work in a office or a environment that business attire should be worn- you now look the professional part.

Being honest- I work for a corporation and have a corporate job and if someone is known for not telling the truth or hides how things are- they do not give off a good business vibe and co-workers tend to steer away from that person.

Avoiding social media- this can lead to problems at the workplace. If you are going out drinking and getting crazy every weekend and it is showing up on social media, people will lose respect for you because you are not holding yourself to a higher standard. There is nothing wrong with drinking, but doing so respectfully is important.

Acting ethically- this is a big one- people really can tell when your following company policies, obeying the rules and being accountable. You are holding yourself to a higher standard.

1. Appearance- I think this is important because I feel how you look, and dress may reflect how you feel. If you show up to work with messy hair and a wrinkly shirt it may show you do not care much about your job, even though it may not be true.

2. Initiative- if you can work alone with little supervision, it can show the employer you have strong dedication to your tasks.

3. Leadership- I feel this is crucial for every employee, not just in management positions. Developing leadership qualities such as maintaining composure under stressful times can help enhance your professionalism.

4. Conflict resolution – There is always conflict and challenging times in the workplace. How you handle them will determine your professionalism.

5. Situational awareness- If you know what behaviors are appropriate for the workplace and what behaviors are not may show employers and co-workers you have respect and avoid awkward moments or tension in the workplace.

Five of the Most Important Professional Behaviors - Ashley Vaughan

Punctuality - I think it's an extremely important practice to be punctual. The phrase "If you're early, you're on time; if you're on time, you're late" is a perfect mantra to live by. When you're early, you give yourself the opportunity to set yourself, your team, and your company up for success with you being fully ready to start your job duties. If you're on time, your time card will show that you're punctual, but you won't be mentally present for a few moments, yet.

Professional Appearance - Being appropriately dressed in clothing that is well-fitted, neutral colors, hair groomed/combed, with minimal makeup and mild fragrances, you can cast yourself as a professional. Bold colors, heavy makeup, and highly fragrant perfumes can show fun, spontaneity, creativity, but none of those things show professionalism. When you hire anyone, you're not looking for someone with the most fun patterns on their suit since it shows that they don't take their job seriously. You're not going to trust someone who isn't clean looking or smelling because if they can't keep their basic hygiene and grooming together, you wouldn't think they'd be able to keep anything together on a job. The first impression of you is made based on your appearance - everyone silently judges a book by its cover at first.

Respectful Communication - Keeping your communication, clean, clear, and concise presents professional behavior. Immediately after hearing a cuss word come out of someone's mouth in an office setting, the professional image of that person goes way down. At the same point, someone who lacks concision, or uses too many words to get their point across, shows that their verbal communication skills are weak, and therefore appears less professional than someone who can get to the point quickly and tactfully. Lastly, lacking clarity, especially in managerial roles, can cause subordinates and colleagues to lose respect for you, as they can't fully decipher what you're saying.

Honesty/Integrity - Honesty, especially about your own mistakes and shortcomings can build trust. Instead of pinning a mistake on someone else, taking full responsibility and figuring out how to fix it, or just taking the consequences, shows integrity, whilst blaming others shows a lack of accountability, and therefore, a lack of professionalism.

Adaptability - Being able to adapt to the environment and circumstances around you shows that you're able to be relied upon in times of hardship and change. Change is hard for a lot of people, but when you can handle it with grace, it shows flexibility and tenacity and commitment.

Integrity-It is important that you act with integrity in all your decisions and conversations. It allows others to see you taking risks, making mistakes, and problem solving. It is being accountable for yourself and building trust with your co-workers.

Professional appearance-you are the face of the company when clients and customers. Being clean, well-groomed, and presentable helps others see you as a professional and will take you more serious.

Communication-think is so important and pairs well with Integrity. Staying calm and communicating clearly, allows everyone to be successful. Communication and being direct will build positive relationships throughout the office.

Private life & Social media-this is very important especially when you are in a leadership role. Social media can be tricky, however if you keep your private life, private, this helps keep drama and unnecessary information out of the work place. Social media should be used in a way to promote your company and attract customers to your services or products.

Flexibility/Adaptability-this is extremely necessary and if you can exemplify your ability to do what is asked of you, your professional life will take on a new meaning. Learning from others and helping through flexibility/adaptability promotes teamwork and trust.

This builds trust with coworkers, employees and customers.

Follow-through: If you say that you are going to do something, do it. It is important to have follow-through because if you don't customers and coworkers will stop trusting you and go elsewhere.

Be respectful: Treat everyone with respect regardless of title or relationship with you. It doesn't matter if a customer spends $1 or $1,000,000 with you, everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Doing this will foster the relationship and often bring more customers through word of mouth.

Accountability: Taking responsibility for ones actions and the outcomes is important.

1) Professional Physical Appearance- Before you even open your mouth, the first thing people see is how you present yourself physically. This includes things such as your choice of dress, how clean you look, and your body language. Failure to keep up your appearance could lead to negative first impressions and a harmful perception before you're even allowed to speak. Set yourself up for success by ensuring your physical appearance is that of a professional.

2) Maintain a Professional Vocabulary- In a professional setting, it doesn't matter how good you look or how well you did your hair if you're talking like a sailor. Maintaining a professional vocabulary means avoiding risqué comments, cursing, and proper phrasing to ensure your thoughts and ideas are well communicated and received as intended. Failure to maintain a professional vocabulary could result in miscommunications, offended coworkers, and being perceived as someone who isn't taking their position seriously. To be perceived as a professional, you need to talk like one.

3) Show Respect- No matter where you work, you will likely engage with coworkers and clients regularly. As such, it's important to show respect to those you're working with and those you're doing business with. Show an understanding of their personality, respect their boundaries, and respect their time when interacting with them. Failure to show respect could cause you to be perceived as rude or uncooperative to work with. Being a team player and acting like a professional begins with respecting those around you.

4) Show Responsibility and Integrity- To be a professional and to behave professionally means understanding the responsibilities of your job and holding yourself accountable to those standards. Understanding your responsibilities shows a commitment to those around you and those you work for, which indicates your ability to act appropriately. When you act honestly and own your responsibilities, you build trust with those around you and show that you're taking your job seriously. Failure to display these traits could result in you seeming untrustworthy, incapable, or like you're not taking your job seriously.

5) Display Initiative in the Workplace- While this is the fifth behavior listed it's one of the most important. Displaying initiative shows a commitment to the job, and indicates that you're an active part of the organization. Things like asking questions after (or during depending on what's appropriate) a meeting, helping others, and volunteering for things you might not normally do are just a few examples of ways to display initiative. Failure to show initiative could result in you being perceived as lazy, unmotivated, or unwilling to do more than the minimum. Build your reputation and show commitment by taking the initiative in the workplace.
