Characters
Nicholas - The protagonist of "The Lumber Room " Nicholas is a young and mischievous boy who lives with three other children his younger brother, his girl cousin, his boy cousin and his cousins aunt. He often clashes with the aunt who is a strict and unpleasant guardian to the children.

Aunt - The aunt is Nicholas' s antagonist. Although she acts as though she is Nicholas' s aunt she is actually the aunt of his cousins. The aunt has a combative relationship with Nicholas whom she expects to cause mischief.

Bobby - Bobby is Nicholas' s younger brother. He has an unpleasant day at the beach because his boots are tied too tight and his aunt wouldn't listen when he tried to ask that she loosen them.

Girl cousin - Nicholas 's girl cousin lives in the same household as Nicholas and the aunt. She scrapes her knee right before the children leave to the beach and cries. Nicholas is impressed by how loudly she cried, but his aunt is certain she will forget all about her knee when she has fun at beach.

Theme
Mischief is the dominant is the theme in this short story. The writer brings out the theme with a humorous manner. It is brought out through a character of a boy named Nicholas.

Techniques

Symbolism
Symbolism technique is used here to explain the mischievous character of Nicholas. When he puts the frog wantedly and when he refuses to help aunty to come out from the water tank we can understand that these incidents are mentioned here only to show how mischievous is the character of Nicholas.

In this story neitheir protagonist nor any characters if the story is telling the story the writer only tells the story to the readers.

Imagery
When he enters the Lumber room he sees a photo hanging on the wall which has a scenery of tending to hunt therefore there he sees a picture of a hunter as well. This scene in the photo gives and idea to think about it to nicholas and also for the readers too.

Here rhetorical questions are asked. When he sees the picture the writer has used the rhetorica questions to brings out the imagination and the idea of Nicholas related to the photo.

The real paradise is the lumber room not the garden. This reveals the irony that the ideal world of an adult is dull and boring to that of a child.

♤ Climax- The story reaches its climax when Nicholas returns his aunt's cruelty by using her command not to enter the gooseberry garden as a reason not to bring a ladder to help her out of the rain-water tank.

♤ Allusion - when pretending that he does not believe his aunt is really his aunt,Nicholas mentions "the Evil one",alluding to the christian religious figure of satan.

♤ Metaphor- After gaining access to the lumber room, Nicholas spends "many golden minutes" marvelling at the tapestry he finds there.In this metaphor, Saki emphasizes the preciousness,brilliance and rarity of the time Nicholas gets to spend with the tapestry by attributing to those minutes the quality of gold.
